We are committed to comply with the Principles for Use of Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the provisions of the Animal Welfare Acts, and other applicable laws and regulations. We have appointed and will maintain a committee of at least five members to maintain oversight of our animal care program. The members have appropiate education and experience to perform their duties with respect to the types of animals and species used and the kinds of projects to be undertaken. If the conduct of a specific project is to be reviewed, the quorum will not include any member having an active role in the project. Changes in membership will be reported annually to the Office for Protection from Research Risks, National Institutes of Health. Current members are: Mr. H.O. Bagg, Supervisor, Laboratory Animal Research Center at Rockefeller University, 20 years of experience in laboratory animal science. W. Bowers, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biochemical Cytology, Chair- man of The Rockefeller University Animal Care Committee, with 20 years of experience in research involving rodents. Dr. A. Cerami, Ph.D., Professor of Medical Biochemistry, 25 years experience all types of laboratory animals. M. Chase, Ph.D., Professor of Immunology and Microbiology Emeritis, 50 years of research experience working with rodents and rabbits. I. Faust, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Human Behavior and Metabolisn, 10 years experience working with rodents. E. Gall, Ph.D., Associate Professor Developmental and Molecular Biology, with 10 years experience working with mice and rabbits. R. Norgren, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Physiological Psychology, 10 years experience working with rats and hamsters. L. Patton, BA, Affiliate of Medical Biochemistry, 20 years of experi- ence working with laboratory animals of all types, especially poultry. R. Reese, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Parasitology and Immunology with 15 years experience with laboratory animals especially primates and guinea pigs. S. Silverstein, M.D., Associate Professor Cellular Physiology and Immunology 15 years experience working with rodents, ungulates and rab- bits. D.M. Stark, DVM, Ph.D., Director, Laboratory Animal Research Center, Associate Professor Rockefeller University, 9 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine. The institutional committee has inspected our facilities and reviewed our procedures and has.recommended the following improvements: 1. Larger primate cages for The Population Council at The Laboratory Animal Research Center. 2. Better air quality and temperature regulations in Gasser 102, 103, Hospital 215. 3. Separation of rats and mice housed in Hospital 215. 4. Improved sanitiation and separate storage and animal areas in Smith Hall 610-621, 208. 5. Use of feeders for rats housed in Smith Hall C-1l. 6. Replacement of porous shelving utilized in Bronk 912. 7. Decrease of animal cage density in Gasser 203. The committee will review our facilities and procedures for care and use of animals at least once each year and make recommendations to the responsible officer of the institution . We will submit to the institution's administration and to the OPRR, NIH an annual report of progress on recommended improvements. We will up- date and resubmit a complete assurance every fifth year to OPRR. Responsible officials of this institution will receive and consider all reports from the committee, questions or complaints concerning welfare of our animal subjects from any source, and will act to fulfill the pro- visions of this assurance. We will annually notify all interested institutional staff of the policy, the standards, and this assurance, and will supply copies on request. We will annually review this assurance and the committee activities for compliance. Records of committee meetings and related administrative actions will be kept and made available to PHS upon request.
