CAMMING S, 14. 11 peMay ) , 5/Rockefeller THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY 7 University /< 1230 YORK AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10021 > i March 22, 1979 Se JOSHUA LEDERBERG PRESIDENT Dr. Martin M. Cummings Director National Library of Medicine Bethesda, Maryland 20014 Dear Dr. Cummings: The Library needs of the Cornell University Medical College-New York Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and The Rockefeller University, neighboring institutions located on York Avenue and 68th Street, have been a matter of grave concern for a number of years. In an attempt to solve our problems in concert, we applied for a grant, which has been funded by The Commonwealth Fund, for a feasibility study for a tri-institutional con- sortium facility housing a library and an information and communications center. Since the three institutions and the study itself are strongly oriented in the bio-medical sciences and commit- ted to delivery of information to the medical profession, we think it only proper to inform you of our plans. I am enclosing a copy of our proposal to The Commonwealth Fund outlining the basic subjects for analysis and the likely schedule for the study. If you would like to have any additional information or have any questions, Mr. Rodney W. Nichols, Executive Vice President, and Mrs. Sonya Wohl Mirsky, Librarian, will be glad to make their files available to you. We would welcome an opportunity to keep you or your designate informed of the progress of our ideas. Indeed if there is a convenient opportunity for you to visit us and share your own perspectives, we would certainly wel- come that. Yours sincerely, bec: Mrs. Sonya W. Mirsky Shua Lederberg Mr. Rodney W. Nichols
