L OF SYNTEX (USA) INC. 3407-ALLVIEW AVENUE O ALTO, CALIFORNIA 94304 INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES SYNTEX EARCH Divisi CE pW A) January 4, 1980 Dy. Joshua Lederberg, President The Rockefeller University 1230 York Avenue New York, NY 10021 Dear Josh: I enjoyed very much the opportunity to talk with you during our recent visit to New York. Subsequently, I gave your secretary over the tele- phone the names of the individuals you may wish to consider for the posi- tion in Bethesda that you called to my attention. As I indicated, I am enclosing the following information regarding the MacArthur Foundation: John D. and Katherine MacArthur Foundation 1000. Sunset Ridge Road Northbrook, IL 60062 Dr. John Corbally, President Subsequent to my conversation with you, I have learned that they are accepting proposals and providing some information regarding the scope of the programs that they wish to support. JIn*my opinion, in view of the rather large sum of money that they should distribute in 1980, they might consider an endowment fund in the name of Jolin and Katherine MacArthur or your plans for a library. This is only a surmise on my part. Edna and I look forward to seeing Marguerite and you, if your schedules permit, on our next visit to New York. I might add that in talking with Mary Sherman and Sam Silverstein, I have learned that their program on plasminogen activator and inhibitor is proceedingwell. Dr. Sherman is ready with her portion of a potential patent application that you may wish to consider as soon as Dr. Silver- stein has prepared hits portion of the joint program. I mention this since, as you are aware, Syntex has a very major interest tn antithrombotic agents and at present we are testing a variety of compounds in both in ~ vitro and in vivo assays. Therefore, when the data from Sloan-Kettering and Rockefeller have been filed and can be discussed, I might suggest that the next step would be a visit out here by Dr. Sherman and Dr. TELEX #348423 — TWX 910 373 1265 Page #2 January 4, 1980 Silverstein. I believe that this is a program that Syntex would support. I mentioned briefly to you the question of whether faculty members at Rockefeller could serve as consultants to Syntex. Perhaps I put it incor- rectly when I indicated that this might be a method of our learning some- thing about ongoing programs at Rockefeller. Rather, I know that the intent is to pick selected programs in which there is an interest here and to suggest that the senior investigator in charge of that specific program become a consultant to Syntex. This obviously, at an approriate time, should be discussed by you with John Fried. Edna joins me in sending warmest regards and all best wishes to Marguerite and you for a happy and healthy New Year. Yours, Ge Abraham White AW:ib
