Dear Ed:

I was glad to get your letter of February 2nd
inviting me to receive your honorary degree on May
24th. It arrived after some delay as it still had
my old Stanford address.

I regret that I have another firm commitment for
the afternoon of May 23rd and it may therefore be quite
difficult for me to participate in the colloquium. How-
ever, please keep me informed how the plans for this
develop and I will see what contribution I may be able
to make.

If in the circumstances you would prefer to post-
pone the degree award to a future occasion where I could
participate more fully I would, needless to say, fully
understand. Meanwhile, I will keep my calendar clear L-—
for the 24th.
