Dear Dr. Lederberg,

It was with much excitement and joy that I returned from
a brief visit to New York and found your most thoughtful
contribution and letter in my mailbox. Surprises such as
youss really make such a project feel worthwhile, for in the
end our primary concern is for the individuals who have contact
with this place. The fact that yodve shown such faith in
what we're doing without even visiting Shelburne Farms is truly
gratifying, not only to myself personally but to all who work
at Shelburne Farms Resources. I do hope that. you and your
family can find a time to come relax here for a weekend sometime.
The Shelburne House, our conference center on the bluffs of
[ake Champlain, is open through the end of September.*

We have not approached the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust
so I was very grateful also to receive that information and we
shall inquire further by letter. From recent experience I am
beginning to think our best chances are with individuals and
local businesses but it never hurts to send out inquiries.

Regarding your point of inquiry about my international interest
in land use, geography and ecology, I would be thrilled to meet
with Russell Peterson. Perhaps, if it is convenient, some time
in the fall would be good though I would very much like to hear
his lecture in November as well. I must mention however, that
though my interests still lie very much in the areas mentionad
above, I believe my skills at this point are best cultivated in
the area of jinternationa ublic relations. It is in the latter
field that Ihave been turning my future vocational thoughts, but
if such a job were ever possible within the realm of land use,
geography and/or ecology, so much the better. My recent partic-
ipation in a Soviet/American conference with my father in which

I gave a speech to the Russians and read a poem I'd written has
been the catalyst for such thought. So I would welcome any oppor-
tunity to explore these ideas further.
