Dear Josh:

I want to thank you for your letter of June 11, and for your
thoughtful and helpful comments about the current vacancy for the
Medical College Deanship. The concerns that you express so well re-
garding the organizational and functional problems have been very much
in the minds of the Search Committee. The search is now moving along
well, and we hope to avoid an interregnum.

I have to leave for China on Tuesday, but I hope to call you up
before then to discuss, in a rather less formal way than I could in this
letter, our current developments concerning these problems.

Let me say that whoever is appointed, one of our overarching goals
is to establish far closer cooperation and interaction with you and your
colleagues at Rockefeller.
