Dear Josh:

As you have heard, Dr. Cooper has resigned as Provost
for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Medical College, effective
October 1, 1980, to accept a very challenging opportunity with
the Upjohn Company. A search committee under my chairmanship
has been appointed and is already at work.

Although we feel a sense of urgency in identifying a
successor to Dr. Cooper, I can assure you that we are committed
to recruiting an individual with a firm commitment to strengthening
relationships between Cornell and its affiliated hospitals. We
expect to consult soon with you and members of your faculty and
professional staff as to the type of person we should seek and
solicit recommendations of specific candidates. We plan to
continue this consultation throughout the search and recruitment
process.

Needless to say, I and the members of the committee will
welcome any personal observations that you would like to make.
