DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA EDMONTON 7, CANADA April 8, 1969, Dr. Joshua Lederberg, Department of Genetics, Stanford University Medical Center, STANFORD, California 94305, U. S.A. Dear Josh: Thank you for your continued warm encouragement, and particularly for the question about Seattle. I was not aware that Evans was moving out - indeed, I'd recently written him about one of the young immunologists there. From what I can see of the problems I have to solve, Seattle should do nicely, so I've enclosed two copies of my c.v. Since I hadn't anticipated this move, I've not been on the alert to possi- bilities for myself (rather, for others) but I do know several members of the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Genetics and have a high regard for the quality of the Univer- sity of Washington. The climate and environs are good. Perhaps the particular appointment you mention is not still vacant: but there may be another opening because of administrative change. If so, I'd be only too happy to consider alternatives because I know my timing is bad. Mary and I both share a very warm satisfaction from the challenges as well as the consideration shown us in California, both by Syntex and the many friends we made. Were it not for some reservations about the difficulties we foresee in providing opportunities for independence and the right degree of adventurousness for our children there, we would not hesitate to return - or to consider Irvine, La Jolla, Santa Cruz, etc. However, we must balance what is very appealing to us against what would be best for them: Seattle seems to offer a good mix. Thank you again for the helping hand. Yours very truly, W. E. Razzell, Ph.D., Professor and Chairman, Department of Microbiology. WER/sgs Encl. 779 77Vd
