Dear Russ:

On behalf of The Rockefeller University, I would
like to express officially our thanks and enthusiasm for
your acceptance of this year's Fairfield Osborn Memorial
Lectureship which will be held at the University on the
evening of November 12.

As you probably know, Fairfield Osborn founded The
Conservation Foundation and served as president of The
New York Zoological Society for 28 years. The memorial
lectureship was established in 1970 by the Friends of
Fairfield Osborn and is sponsored jointly by The New York
Zoological Society, The Conservation Foundation and The
Rockefeller University. Its objective is to promote wide-
spread dialogue on environmental issues which were his
life's work. Under separate cover, I am sending some
material about Osborn which may be of interest to you.

Preliminary planning for this year's program is
already underway. The New York Zoological Society and
The Conservation Foundation are preparing selective lists
which include Trustees, major contributors and interested
friends so that a broad and diverse attendance can be as-
sured. We would appreciate a similar list from the Audubon
Society, and other sources of guests you may wish to sug-
gest. These may be sent to Mr. Barry Dress at the Uni-
versity who is coordinating arrangements for the Lecture.
He can be reached at 360-1036, should you or a member of
your staff wish to speak with him.

The three institutional sponsors are considering a
‘proposal to publish the Fairfield Osborn Lecture as a
major statement on environmental affairs. With this in
mind, we would appreciate an advance text of your address

whenever that might be possible. In order to prepare a
press release, we hope that you will soon be able to
forward a curriculum vitae and an 8 x 10 glossy photo-
graph to Mr. Dress.

Once again, our thanks for agreeing to offer this
year's Fairfield Osborn Memorial Lecture. We are looking
forward to your presentation.
