THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY 1230 YORK AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10021 October 10, 1979 JOSHUA LEDERBERG PRESIDENT Dr. Richard W. Lyman President Stanford University Stanford; California 94305 Dear Dick: It is with the greatest of pleasure that I acknowl- edge and accept your invitation to the Camp lectureship. My thought is to address various aspects of health prog- ress, health research and health education to which the research universities have made and will continue to make the most important contributions. There is a great deal that needs to be said about these matters that conforms neither to the canons of "let's distribute what we have" nor "unlimited funds for research will automatically solve all our problems". I will be giving some thought to crystallizing these themes around meaningful titles that may attract audiences who will then not be disap- pointed in what they hear. Presumably the next step will be some word from your committee indicating with whom I might discuss the most convenient dates. I trust that you are out of your irksome constraints of movement and ready to expose yourself again to the same chances. One thing wrong with the very pleasant evening we spent together here in New York was that Marguerite was away; and she bids me to ask that you keep us both in mind should another similar opportunity (without benefit of crutches!) present itself. With best regards. You sincerely,
