Once again I have the pleasure of notifying you that the recipient
of the James Murray Luck Award has been named. The winner of the 1983
prize, Dr. Michael E. Fisher, was enthusiastically recommended by the
Academy's selection committee for “the continuing sequence of reviews
that put into proper perspective discoveries concerning critical
phenomena and defined the fundamental problems he and others
subsequently resolved.” I am forwarding some background material that
was provided to us, It gives excellent support to the committee's
decision and assures us that we have still another outstanding
addition to the growing list of distinguished recipients of the Luck
Award.

As is the custom, the prize will be presented at the Academy's
Monday evening award ceremony. A reception is scheduled before the
8 o'clock program, and I hope you will join us for the occasion. I
