Dear Henry:

I just learned from Bob Good that his choice for the 1980
Philip Levine lecture is Hakomori. You will recall that in
a recent telephone conversation we mentioned Hakomori and
George Klein.

We plan to invite Hakomori to meet with us regarding a new
approach to investigate the biochemistry of breast cancer.
It is now evident that Springer's 20 years work in this
area - the T substance of Friedenreich and Thomsen and

its relationship as precursors to N and M blood factors -
has all been in vain. Enclosed is a copy of Blumenfeld's
paper in PNAS, June 1978 on amino acids as determinants
for M and N specificities. Also enclosed is a preprint
of a paper soon to appear in a volume edited by Jamieson
and Sandler.

It is generally recognized that Hakomori's expertise in
lipids and his notable contributions on the biochemistry of
genetic markers of the ABO and Forssman antigens are essential
for a study of breast adenocarcinoma.

I hope that other members to be consulted will agree to
Hakomori as the next Philip Levine lecturer possibly in the
months of February or March 1980. We can consider George
Klein for 1981 in view of his long experience on the possible
role of viruses in cancer.
