THE DEPUTY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES TO THE UNITED NATIONS October 30, 1978 Ms. Lorna Brennan Committee on Admissions Council on Foreign Relations 58 East 68th Street New York, New York 10021 Dear Lorna: I am writing to second Dr. Joshua Lederberg's nomina- tion for membership in the Council on Foreign Relations. I have known Dr. Lederberg since he came to Geneva in 1970 as a Special Adviser on the Biological Weapons Con- vention. His outstanding professional reputation had, of course, preceded him. His strong interest in foreign affairs and concern for international issues, as well as his expertise, in the complex questions at hand, were evident in all aspects of his participation in the work of the Disarmament Committee. Concurrently with his work on genetics at the Stanford School of Medicine, he has concerned himself with problems of the developing work, most notably in environmental and health affairs, including the work of the World Health Organization. Dr. Lederberg takes well to public affairs and would certainly prove a stimulating contributor to Council “meetings and activities. I am pleased to give my whole- hearted support to his nomination. incerely, net oux Lf ‘ James F. Leonard
