In Chancellor Bowker's absence from campus, I am responding to
your timely letter of April 9, 1979 in support of Professor

Herman Witkin for a possible appointment under the Chancellor's
Distinguished Professors and Lecturers Program for the academic
year 1979-80. I understand that the Department of Psychology is
currently preparing an application to this Program for Dr. Witkin,
and I have therefore sent the Chairman of the Department a copy of
your letter for inclusion in his recommendation.

For your further information about this Program, budgetary con-
siderations limit the number of such appointments in any one year,
and the many applications received are reviewed and recommended
for appointment by a seven-member faculty committee.
