Williams Director and Secretary The Wellcome Trust 1 Park Square West London, NW1l 4LJ England Dear Peter: This is by way of an amendation to the letter that Rodney Nichols sent you last month about your proposed fellowship program in parasitology. I have talked to Ken Warren, meanwhile, about the special laboratory course in the organisms of parasitic disease that we are trying to organize at the Marine Biological Labora- tory at Woods Hole. I think this will be a keystone in the promulgation of scientific interest in parasites. Obviously it affords a particular opportunity for short term fellowship support, especially to enable students from outside the United States to participate. With respect to the more general program, that you and I had discussed before, I can understand the argument that it should not be limited to a single institution. This would be quite inappropriate in the long run: and we at the Rockefeller would certainly not wish to be the sole instrument of exchange. However, there is no doubt that it would be administratively much simpler to manage a program that had a clearly identified single focus; and I thought it would accelerate the idea to start it off, on a modest scale, just that way. As the rationale for this proposal is to help make the administration of the fellowship awards more manage- able, this is a decision that of course must be left pri- marily in your hands. Dr. Peter O. Williams June 7, 1979 -2- We are actively initiating a formal search for a senior professorship in parasitology, and to that end I would certainly welcome any suggestions you might have. We have not yet fully characterized the position: but we are surely looking for a person who could embrace both the most modern approaches of contemporary chemical biology, and a real interest in the biology of parasites responsible for important disease. Yoyrs sincerely, Jfshua Lederberg cc: Mr. Rodney W. Nichols
