The reprint you are asking for is an abbreviation of
the full German version. This was the festival presentation
at the occasion of the 100st anniversary of the "Union of
Chemical Industries in Germany", held in Berlin in October
1977. I add here the German version’ and also the English
overbridged version.

It is with great satisfaction that we learned about
your nomination as President of the Rockefeller University.
I wish you all the best for this difficult job .... with
the image of the famous old Rockefeller Institute.

My wife, Ursula, and I will be in New York (I as a men-
ber of the Advisory Beard of the Sloan-Kettering Institute),
and Lew Thomas suggested that we may have a double room in
the Abbey Aldrich guest house. If so, I would be hopeful to
meet you in New York while being with the Sloan-Kettering
people: October 19/20 are the official dates, but we intend
to stay (perhaps) for about 2 weeks in order to perform some

experiments on dogs having lymphomas, treating them with endo-
toxin and combinations of endotoxin and certain drugs that re-

duce untoward side effects,

Our experiments with the hybrids are progressing. The key
point focusses now on the question of colonization of the life
(vaccine) bacteria in the gut. Wether the ability to colonize

will introduce pathogenicity again, is the main question, At
present it leoks still promising.
