Kaiser, Sr. Professorship in Health Policy. My personal view is that we should be looking for an indi- vidual in a field that would bring about the greatest chance of making an inductive leap in the area of health policy. (The analogous person to a hypothetical biochemist in genetics who incidentally has enough medical training to know the lay of the land). Toward that end we seek a creative researcher who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship in an area related to health services or health policy. We would expect such an individual to. be an innovative person who would assume a leadership role in interdisciplinary activity involving both research and teaching. In all probability, knowledge of medicine, public health or health services delivery, as well as strong quantitative and communication skills would be essential. \ As you know, most of the individuals currently identified as the "outstanding" scholars in the health policy arena are economists. Interspersed is a sprinkling of physicians and one or two lawyers and sociologists. Are there individuals in other fields who you think would be likely to bring about significant discoveries bearing upon health policy? Where should we be looking and at whom? Any help you could afford us in our search would be much appreciated. In another vein, Marguerite may be interested in a new book authored with me by John Ruark, one of my residents. It is entitled "Dying Dignified" and is to be released by Addison-Wesley this autumn. My best personal wishes to Marguerite and to you. Sincerely, Can Thomas A. Gonda, M.D. TAG:sj
