What I am looking for is more background on the history and "sociology" of the BABEL phenomenon: the factors that modulate the differentiation of languages as a matter of historical fact; and the evaluation of the "functional utility". (As a geneticist I tend to have a speciation model -- but not all the ecological niches ought to be so well isolated.) Do you have any further bibliography?
