Thanks for your note about Extein's paper regarding the distinctions
he believes should be made between "state" and "trait" disorders. Quite
. frankly, I have never been a fan of psychiatry of this sort. So, as a
well-informed amateur, I had come to the same conclusion you did and I was
delighted to have your professional confirmation.

As you know, Josh Lederberg is extremely interested in considering
the possibility of starting a new research program here in what might
be called biochemical psychiatry--with emphasis, as you suggest, on the
biochemical basis of disease. If you have any specific suggestions
about research directions or, even more important, gifted younger investigators
in this area, both Josh and I would like to chat with you about them.
