Joshua Lederberg has been president of The Rockefeller University
in New York City since 1978. From 1959 to 1978 he was a professor
of genetics, biology, and computer science at the Stanford University
School of Medicine, and chairman of the Department of Genetics. He
served as chairman of the Department of Medical Genetics at the
University of Wisconsin from 1957 to 1959. In 1957, he was a
Fulbright visiting professor of bacteriology at the University of
California, Berkeley. From 1945 to 1947, he did postdoctoral research
at Yale University and at Columbia University.

Lederberg received a PhD from Yale University and a BA from
Columbia College. He also holds several honorary degrees.

Lederberg received the Nobel prize in medicine in 1958 and
has appointments as a member of the Royal Society of London (1979)
and an honorary fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine (1981).

Lederberg is a member of the President's Science Advisory
Committee, the Defense Science Board, the council of the National
Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, the board of directors

of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, the science advisory board

 

of the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Pathology, the board

of governors of the Weizmann Institute, the advisory board of
Technion Medical School and Research Institute, the board of
directors of the Institute for Scientific Information, and the board

of trustees of the Sackler Medical School.
