Crow.ey, M.D. STANFORD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Acting Vice-President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine April 7, 1980 Joshua Lederberg, Ph.D., President Rockefeller University New York, New York Dear Josh: Sorry I didn't get a chance to see you at the end of the meeting. I enjoyed our brief chat when you first arrived. I thought your summing-up on Friday afternoon was superb. You hit all the right notes with the right volume, touch and nuance. It was particularly appropriate and for- tunate for us that you were able to come back and preside over the final session. Your influence over the development of the School and Center during the two decades was an extremely important and constructive one and the result was well demonstrated at the Symposium. I am writing to you seeking your advice on another matter as well. The Grant Chair was vacated when you left, as you know. I appointed a small committee of three senior endowed chair holders to advise me on a potential new holder. It so happened that we had another chair to fill with a basic science orientation. Investigation indicated that the Grant Chair was not restricted to Genetics, but was basically available School-wide. The com- mittee has recommended Hugh McDevitt and Bob Lehman as their first choices for the two available chairs. Additional people that were high on their - list included Avram Goldstein and Stanley Cohen. Stan actually nominated himself and made a strong personal pitch in his own behalf. I would appre- ciate your candid and, obviously, confidential views on the aforementioned faculty members as well as any other individuals you think we should serious- ly consider. I also want to thank you for your comments about the Lane Library. We are going to put some money into new shelving and gain considerably more functional space. However, this will only put off the day when we will have to make a more important and obviously more expensive decision regarding the future of the Library. Sincerely, Lawrence G. owley, M.D. LGC :mp
