The recollection of Dr. Manning is not right. The R. A. Welch Address
and the pages from a McGraw Hill Publication give you the story pretty well
as it happened as does the first part of a manuscript I wrote recently for
a Mendeleev volume. I enclose all three.

I'm sorry that I do not have a text for my Nichols Award address (which
I take to be "From the Oxidation of Oxygen to Synthetic Metals, etc.,") but
the enclosed pieces from a review written for a centennial celebration of the
Society of Chemical Industry and a recent note from J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Communs.
1983, pp. 103-5, give the essence of what I had to say.
