Cary Chairman of the Board International Business Machines Corporation Old Orchard Road Armonk, New York 10504 Dear Frank: Thank you so much for arranging the lunch we had together at Armonk the other day. I enjoyed it very much: it was simply all too brief to exchange a lot of very exciting ideas; but it was a very good start and I am looking forward to the first steps to follow- up, especially from Ralph Gomory. I was a little startled to have Ralph remind me, all too realistically, of the cultural and psychologi- cal barriers that still prevail in the systematic use of computing and communication systems in laboratories. But that won't stop us from plugging away; and I am particularly heartened by other developments in New York City, like Columbia and NYU that may give us a stronger set of connecting partners for the very specialized efforts that we want to pursue here. I was just delighted at the extent to which re- search on brain function kept coming back into the discussion, as this is certainly an area in which our University has historically maintained a very strong position, and which I certainly intend to sustain. More than ever a wide variety of strands from molecular and cell biology, animal physiology and behavioral studies are beginning to come together and the tapestry that is emerging is very exciting indeed. Looking forward to seeing you further at our Board meetings, if not sooner. Yours sincerely, he . Joshua Lederberg
