Thank you for your letter of January ll. My direc-—
tion of my inquiry of January 6 to you was perhaps a little
inappropriate, I deliberately chose you because I wanted
someone a little outside of the McCullough, Braun, Spink,
or Carpenter axes and because I thcught that if we had been
missing some obscure but important genetic implication you
would see it.

Your frank comments are indeed most helpful to us.
I shall discuss the possibility of approaching Dave Berman
directly with Dr. Nelson and Dr. Charles Carpenter, who is
Head of the Bacteriology Division as well as Chairman of
Our Department.
