Dec 7, 1945 Dear Lederberg: I was so rushed the other day that I didn't have time to write a note with the Fellowship application blanks, but enclosed Dr. Meader's letter hoping it would adequately explain the situation. I think, from this letter and from conversations with Meader that although it is not in line with the Childs Fund custom, that there is a good chance of an exception bring made in your case. I hope it turns out that way. It might be best to stress, in making the application, the value a stay here would be in your training for your further career in medical research, rather than the solving of an immediate problem and its relationship to cancer (Which relationship is somewhat far-fetched in this instance!) Let me know if there's anything else I can do, and here's hoping. In any case, however, some funds will be available, as I told you last week. Yours, E. L. Tatum
