JUN) ¢ Ny & ‘Ys, NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20546 REPLY TO ATTN OF: SL(RSY:dr) June 11, 1973 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Stanford Univ. Medical Center Stanford, CA 94305 Dear Josh: Thanks for your recent letter about your plans for future funding sources. As far as I can find out, Berry (Vinograd) plans to give you $60K - the same as last year. Vinograd's program was cut by nearly 20% this year, so it is very unlikely that he will be able to give you more than that. My objective this year has to be to get my support of your program down to that portion which is clear- ly directly related to "Planetary Biology" objectives. I have been assuming that it would turn out to be in the neighborhood of $100K, but I still have some flexibility. Since you are due for renewal in September, I hope we can arrive at a number which maintains the viability of the Planetary Biology work and causes the least trauma to any personnel who are affected by lack of funding of other elements of your total program. The University of Cincinnati letter to you is of interest to me and I would like a response from you on this or similar requests. Thanks very much. Sincerely, AD che Richard S. Young .
