Hays Pesticides Regulation Division Agricultural Research Service U. S&S. Department of Agriculture Washington, D. C. 20250 Dear Dr. Hays, I am writing you at the instigation of a letter I just received from Dr. Charles F. Wurster from the Environmental Defense Fund. You will perhaps recognize me as being something less than fanatic in my concern about the abuse of DDT. I would not advocate the instant abolition of well established residual pesticides if I felt that there were a realistic and effective program to control their abuse and to reduce the level of environmental contamination by them at a pace consistent with the spontaneous decay of existing residues. I am, therefore, quite alarmed at the allegations made by Dr. Wurster that "policy is as it was before" and I would greatly appreciate any. factual information that could enlighten me and help to rebut this allegation or leave it standing as the case may be.
