A US. Department of Health and Human Services study shows that by the time —
children enter the seventh grade more than one half say that they have no interest in
science. Considering the importance of science and technology to American
economic growth and competitiveness, this study shows alarming results,

As a recipient of the National Medal of Science, you are an example ofthe —
excellence in science we must continue to foster in this country, As a leader in your
field, the Foundation believes you can offer an important perspective on how to
capture students interest in science.

The Foundation is conducting a survey to gather information in two areas.

First,we are interested in how National Medal of Science recipients became _
interested in careers in science and what inspired Medalists to succeed in their field.
Secondly, we are interested in your ideas and input on what needs to be done to
create the next generation of pioneers,

We've kept the survey short in order to get your response faxed back to us at (413)
399-4356 before August 31,1994. The information gathered in this survey will be
used to facilitate a symposium in conjunction with the annual Presidential awards,
