Dear Francis:
I am writing to you to invite you to become an Associate of the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine.
About two years ago the Institute of Orthomolecular Medicine was established in Menlo Park.  By action of the Board of Trustees, the name of the Institute has now been changed to the "Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine."  This Institute is pursuing several programs in the direct application of science to medicine, with special emphasis on preventive medicine.  These programs are extensions of our research efforts at the University of California, San Diego, and at Stanford University, and are now supported mainly by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Educational Foundation of America, and the National Foundation and by gifts from private donors. Also, we have just set up a clinical division.  It is hoped that this Institute will provide a stimulating environment in which scientists and physicians may work for the improvement of human wellbeing.  The Institute is now seeking an endowment for this endeavor.
In accordance with these goals, the Trustees decided to establish a Board of Associates for the Institute.  It is hoped that these Associates will participate in the Institute's program in an advisory capacity and in other ways.
I think that the Institute would be fortunate to have you as a member of the Board of Associates.  I hope that you will accept this appointment.
