June 9, 1981 Dear Josh: My file on the 1946 Cold Spring Harbor Symposium contains only a carbon copy of the manuscript and my copy of the page proof. I believe that this is explained in part by the fact that the initial correspondence was with Avery who declined to participate but, as he did on a couple of other occasions, proposed me as a substitute. Thus, most of the correspondence concerning arrangements and any announcement of the meeting would have resided in the Avery files which he so carefully and inexplicably destroyed at the time of his departure for Nashville in 1948.
