Dear Dr. Stanley:
I am pleased that you are favorably inclined toward participation in the program connected with the dedication of the new Avery Memorial Gate.  I believe that I can assure you that no manuscript will be required and that a brief contribution will be appropriate.  Dobzhansky has agreed to participate on a similar basis - i.e., a brief, informal discussion.
I remember very well your chapter in Doerr and Hallauer, and in fact it was referred to in the 1944 paper.  It seems strange now in the context of our present knowledge that Rivers could have resisted the idea of a possible relationship between the phenomenon of transformation and the behavior of viruses.
