January 5, 1946 Dear Dr. Stanley: In regard to the meeting of the American Chemical Society at Atlantic City April 12, I am very happy to say that Dr. McCarty has agreed to present our work on the transformation of pneumococcal types. The title of the paper might read as follows: "Chemical Nature of Substance Inducing Transformation of Pneumococcal Types," by Maclyn McCarty. While I appreciate the spirit in which you write, I feel it would be quite superfluous for my name to appear on the program. I have not yet received from Dr. Brand any further details regarding the preparation of an abstract or plans for publication. The tentative program looks interesting, and I am sure the meeting will be both interesting and successful. With kindest regards, Sincerely yours, Oswald T. Avery, M.D.
