Thank you for your letter and the information you sent.  I still think very much that although Griffith does distinguish between the enzyme and its product it is still unclear to me whether they could have grasped the transformation experiment as a genetic experiment.  There were vague ideas round that time (Haldane) that the genes were autosynthetic catalysts and I suppose that that would make your interpretation of Griffith's sentences consistent.  I am very pleased to have the other papers you sent me.
