Dr. Avery was the 1949 choice of the Board and its advisors in recognition of his comprehensive investigations of the pneumococci, their classification, and their immunological relationships, which have lead to a wider basic understanding of the laws of heredity and environment as well as to a more adequate knowledge of the processes of infection. As in former years, the choice had fallen upon work that could be fittingly described as "long-continued and fundamental contributions to the science and practice of medicine."
