Memo of conversation with Dobzhansky 1/21/74 at Pittendrigh dinner.
Mirsky introduced him to Avery in 1940-41, soon after Dob'y arrived in NY from Padadena. (D' knew Mirsky at Pasadena circa '36, when the latter took a fellowship ? with Pauling).  Avery would not admit bacteria had "genes" - these were peculiar to garden peas.
Later Mirsky became very critical of Avery.  In D's mind Harriet settled the genetics of DNA purity with proteinase expts. (secondary attribution?)
D: Did not remember White reference in 2' edition.  I did not ask him about M. Heidelberger.
D: Did not know how Harriet became interested.  She was officially LC Dunn's student.  [JL - Mirsky visited Columbia often - seminars, etc., collaborated with Pollister.  Perhaps ask Hans Rio if he has any recollections.].
Suggested that Am Ph Soc may have De[ . . . ] papers - e.g. C&H files.  [JL: ask Phil Hartman0.  D did not really answer my question about his own papers
D poked fun at Caslan's attribution to HJ Muller of having discovered everything [JL and D: like HJM did himself.].
He will send me D. Willistoni paper verifying coadapted gene c[ . . . ] (re RKM questions)
