oTUTO OF FIFTH ARMY HOSHTAL BATTLE CASUALTY HEATHS A PRELIMINARY REPORT IN THREE VOLUMES * SNYDER and CULBERTSON VOLUME TWO STUDY OF FIFTH ARMY HOSPITAL BATTLE CASUALTY DEATHS An Analysis of Case Reports from Field and Evacuation Hospitals on 145Q Fatally Wounded American Soldiers A PRELIMINARY REPORT IN THREE VOLUMES by HOWARD E. SNYDER, COLONEL, MC, JUS Surgical Consultant{ Fifth Army. and TAMES W. CULBERTSON, CAPTAIN, MC, AUS Surgical Service, 8th Evacuation Hospital Gardone Riviera,, Italy September 1945 VOLunc TV/O SECTION III CAUSES OF DEATH Part 2 Detailed Observations PRELIMINARY REMARKS The cases in each of the principal wound groups are considered separately in Part 2 of this section. In each of the subdivisions the first table lists the immediate cause of death for the cases in that particular group. The remaining tables deal with the contributory or associated conditions present in the same group of cases. Each of the tables listing the latter shows first the incidence of the conditions in those cases in which the immediate cause of death is known; next the incidence in those cases in which the immediate cause of death is "undetermined, unclassified"; and finally, the total of the first two. Separate listing of the incidence for those in which the immed- iate cause of death is "undetermined, unclassified" is of value because the figures renresent the total incidence of causes of death in this groun, and one of these conditions in each case may well have been the immediate cause of death. In the cases in which the immediate diagnosis is knowrn (1st column) the immediate cause of death is never repeated in the tables dealing with contributory or associated conditions. 120 CAUSES OE DEATH IN THOSE CASES IE ‘WHICH THE PRINCIPAL WOUND WAS INTRACSaNIAL TABLE LXXII IMMEDIATE GAUSS OS DEALS III THOSE GASES III HEIGH THE PHIUCIPAL WOUND WAS IHmPACPAHIAL Ueural trauma &/or intracranial hemorrhage or clot 210 Shock (sll trauma & hemorrhage) 15 Pneumonia 12 Intro cranial blast trauma alone 5 Clostridial myositis, extremity 3 Intracranial hiact and other trauma 2 Thrombotic embolism (Pulmonary) 2 Meningitis, intracranial 2 Pigment nephropathy 2 Brain abscess 1 Pat embolism (Pulmonary) 1 Tracheo-bronchial obstruction, asuirated vomitus 1 Undetermined, intracranial condition 1 Undetermined, unclassified UO TOTAL 297 121 taple lyyiii THE STIOLOG-Y OF SHOCK IN ITS INCIDENCE AS A CONTRIBUTORY OH ASSOCIATED CONDITION IN THOSE CASES IN WHIGH THE PRINCIPAL WOUND WAS INTRACRANIAL Immediate Cause of Death Known Immediate Cause of Death Un- determined Unclassified Total* Incidence ETIOLOGY OH TYPE CP SHOCK; Car di o-resp i ratory embarrassment plus trauma & hemorrhage 3 1 k Cardio-respiratory embarrassment plus trauma & hemorrhage plus contamination or sepsis 1 0 1 Contamination or sepsis plus trauma & hemorrhage k 0 k Trauma & hemorrhage 115 36 1R1 TOTAL 123 36 160 *Noes not include incidence of shock as cai immediate cause of death. 122 TABLE LXXIV DATA ON SHOCK IN ITS INCIDENCE AS A CONTRIBUTORY OR ASSOCIATED CONDITION IN CASES IN WHICH THE PRINCIPAL WOUND WAS INTRACRANIAL Immediate Cause of Death Known Immediate Cause of Death Un- determined Unclassified Total*- Incidence No evidence of shock 119 3 122 Shock - corrected by therapy 49 4 53 Shock - suspected, not proven 19 6 25 Shock - successful correction doubtf ul 39 2 41 Shock - uncorrected 16 25 41 * Does not include incidence of shock as an immediate cause of death.
