For Thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. Psa. CXXxviii. 2. The word of our God shall stand for- ever. , Isa. xl 8 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Matt. xxiv. 35. If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowl- edge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 1 Cor. xiv. 37. He is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live. Gen. xx. 7. Abraham prayed unto God : and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid servants. I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord. 2 Kings xx. 5. If I send pestilence among my peo- ple. If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves^ and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 chron.V 13, u. And Asa . . . was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died. 2 Chron. xvi. 12,13. The Lord hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people. 2 Chron. xxx 20. In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the Lord; CONCERNING SICKNESS 9 and he spake unto him, and he (margin) wrought a miracle for him. But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him ; for his heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. 2 chron. xxxii. 24,25. Satan . . . smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. Job ii. 7. Surely I would speak to the Al- mighty, and I desire to reason with God ... ye are all physicians of no value. Job xiii. 3. 4. If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show unto man his uprightness : Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. He looked upon men, and if any say, 1 have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man. To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living. Job xxxiii, 14—30. Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee. psaim iv. 22. Give us help from trouble : for vain is the help of man. psaim ix. 11 He that is our God is the God of sal- vation : and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death. psaim lxviu. 20. Fools, because of their transgressions, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhorreth all man- ner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destruc- tions. Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and/or His won- derful works to the children of men. Psalm cvii. 17, 18, 19, 20, 21. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing. Isa. xxxv. 3> 4> 5> 6. 0 Lord, by these things men live, . . . so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live. isa. xxxviu. ie. Thou hast in love to my soul de- livered it from the pit of corruption : .... For the grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord. Jer xxx 17 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me l jer xxxii. 27, Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. After two days will he re- vive us; in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Hosea vi. 1, 2. Therefore, also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee deso- late because of thy sins. Micah- vi-13- The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. Mark v. 43. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. Mark vi. 5. And they (the disciples) cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. . Mark vi. 13. Straightway they knew Him, and ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment; and as many as touched him were made whole. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw aught. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look . up, and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. Mark viii. 22, 23, 24, 25. Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit. Markix. 17 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark ix. 23. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out ? If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a Stone ? Luke xi. n. Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it. Luke xi. 28. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked. John v. 5—9. Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. John v. 17. The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John vi. 63. John x. 20, 21. The scripture cannot be broken. John x. 35. This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. John xi. 4. Jesus said unto her, Said I not unto thee, that if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God ? John xi. 40. And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leap- ing up, stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. Acts iii. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. And His name through faith in his name, has"made this man strong whom ye see and know ; yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Acts iii. 16. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was showed. Acts iv. 14, 22. And now, Lord, . . . grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word by stretching forth thy hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child, Jesus. Acts iv. 29,30. They brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a mul- titude out of the cities round about. . . bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one. Acts v, 15, 16, 50 THE WORD OF THE LORD And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Acts vi. 8. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, cry- ing with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, aud that were lame, were healed. Acts viii. 6,7. And Ananias went his way, and en- tered into the house ; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, .... hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and bo tilled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he re- ceived sight forthwith. Acts ix. 17, 18. And there he found . . iEneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy. And Peter said un-to him, iEneas, Jfcsus Christ maketh thee whole; aris3, and make thy bed. And CONCERNING SICKNESS. 51 he arose immediately. And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord. Acts ix. 33,34,45. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turn- ing him to the body said,Tabitha arise. And she opened her eyes; and when she saw Peter, she sat up. Acts ix. 40. God is no respecter of persons. Acts x. 34. God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and w.ith power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him Acts x. 38. And there sat a certain man at Lys- tra, impotent in his feet, being a crip- ple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: The same heard Paul speak, who steadfastly beholding tiim, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked Acts xiv. 8# 9.10. 52 THE WORD OF THE LORD And it came to pass as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: . . Paul . . turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. Acts xvi. 16,18. They received the Word with all readiness of mind. Acts xvii. n. God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handker- chiefs or aprons, and the diseases de- parted from them, and the evil spirits went out of them Acts xix. 11/12. The father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island came, and were healed. Acts xxviii. 8,9. CONCERNING SICKNESS. 53 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hear- ing, and their eyes have they closed: lest tbey should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and under- stand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Acts xxviii. 27. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief: but, was strong in faith, giving glory to God: and being fully persuaded that, what he had prom- ised, he was able also to perform. Rom. iv. 20, 21. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things. Rom. viH. 32. Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Rom.x. n. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. R0m. x. 13 Faith cometh by hearing, and hear- ing by the word of God. I beseech you therefore, . . . that ye present your bodies . . unto God, which is your reasonable service. R0m. xii. i. God hath dealt to every man the mea- sure of faith. Rom. xii. 3. Continuing instant in prayer. ! Rom. xii. 12. Hast thou faith ? have it to thyself before God. Rom. xiv. 22. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom. xv. 4. To make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed. Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit Of God. Rom. xv. 18,19. Your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1 Cor. u. 5. CONCERNING SICKNESS. 55 We are laborers together with God. 1 Cor. iii. 9. Now the body is . . . for the Lord ; and the Lord for the body. Cor. vi 13 God.....will also raise up us by his own power. i cor. vi. i4. Every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that. i cor. vii. 7. For this cause many are weak and Bickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. , 1 cor. xi. 30,31,32. For to one is given by the Spirit . . the gifts of healing. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of heal- ings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. . . Are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing ? 1 Cor. xii. 28, 29, 30. 56 THE WORD OP THE LORD The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. • x cor. v. 26. Watch ye, stand fast in the faith . . . be strong. ! Cor. xvi. 13. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. 2Cor. i.20. For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Cor. v. 7. For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salva- tion have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time ; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor. vi. 2. Now unto him that is able to do, ex- ceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus through- out all ages, world without end. Amen. Eph. iii. 20, 21. When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. Eph.iv.8. CONCERNING SICKNESS. 57 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. EPh. v. 20. He is the Saviour of the body. Eph. v.23. We are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. Eph. v. 30. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance. Eph. vi. 18. He was sick nigh unto death, but God had) mercy on him and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. Phil. a. 27. Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death. Phil. a. 30. Let your requests be made known UntO God. Phil. iv. 6. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Phil. iv. 13.
