for A man in that case Take ye Cups of Ripe Acornes & make them in to powder & drink as much as will Ly on A shiding in any Liquor fasting - 3 or 4 days following & it seldome fails - for worms Take a handfull of Peach Leaves and chopp them small & sprincle them 10th, viniger & put them in to two Little bags then bind one to ye stomack & ye other to ye Belly, & it will sertainly cure - to make Usquobagh prepare yr spirits thus, viz put a good handfull of Angelico & 3 quarters of A pound of Anniseed into three Gallons of Beer or Cider Grounds, & soe distill it In A Limbick Into 6 gallons thus prepared put 5 pounds of Raisons, 5 pounds of figs, one pound of Dates, 4 ounces of dried Liquorish, 5 ounces of nutmegs, & 5 ounces of Cinomon: stone yr raisons, rub yr figs In A cloth to cleanse them, cleanse the dates & take out their [crossed out] stones & Inward skins, scrape ye Liquorish, & then having bruised all these Ingredients grossly, Infuse them 2 days, stoping ye vessell close & stiring it twice A day very well, then strain it thro a flannen bag, & Raucing colour'd it with braid saffron according to yr own mind, Lit it stand 24 hours & then power it off from ye seadiment & bottle it: A dram of saffron colours A gallon of ye Liquor: this Approvd by Couz: To: Cross Mrs Rabers Usquobath on Ale when yr Ale is workt very well to tun put in one ounce of Gollup, stir it well & tun it & stop it close, In A fortnight disstill it in to Low wines, to every 2 gallons of this spirits put A quarter of A pound of Aniseeds one ounce of Callamus Aramaticus sliced thin, disstill this to one gallon, then Infuse in it half A pound of liquorish stick, when it is sweet enough to yr pallet deccuit it & couler it deep enough to stain A glass with saffron, bottle it & it will be fit to drink in 2 months, ye staler ye Ale is ye better provided it is not sower - To disolve Ambergrees Mrs Swinger take 60 grains of Ambergrees, 30 grains of good musk, 20 of ciuet, shrid ye Ambergrees fine, bruse ye musk & put to it oyle of [crossed out] ben one ounce, half As much Juice of Lemon, put these in to A silver dish & Let it boyle A quarter of An hour on A gentle fire, then put it in A glass & stop it very close & oy it down with A Leather & It will keep 20 year, this yu may Allways, have by yu to perfume waters cakes &c: - It cureth ye Bloody flex, If ye belly be Anointeth therewith, make A scearcloath therewith to heal All ye Above mentioned malladies &c: 5 A plaister for An Ague Take strong tobacka Leafs six drams, A small handfull of corands & As much Boors greesas will make it in to A salve by beating it in A morter of stone, when its beaten to A salve take 2 pieces of sheeps Leather & spread ye salve An inch thick on both of them & Lay them on ye veins of both wrists 24 hours before ye fit comes, It's A cure for either quartern of tersion = 6 A scearcloth for A bruse strain or wound Take A pint of oyle olive, red Lead 8 ounces, vergins wax 4 ounces, oyntment of populion 4 ounces, oyle of Roses & camamile of each one ounce Set ye oyle on ye fire & melt ye wawax with it, then put in ye populion & other oyls & when it's melted put in ye Red Lead, stir it well & let it boyle till it be black, then dip in yr cloath & Aply it As yu have occasion = 7 The Lead Plaister Take 2 pound & 4 ounces of ye best & greenest sallet oyle, A pound of good Red Lead & A pound of white Lead, beat them well to dust then take 12 ounces of castle soap, Incorperate All these well together In A well glased great earthon pot that ye soap may come upwards, set it on a Slow fire of coles for one houre & half, still stiring it with An Iron bad or round pumell, then make yr fire something biger till it be ye couler of oyle, then drop some on ye board, & If it cling neither to ye finger nor to ye board it is enough, then take Resonable fine Roland of what bigness yu pleas & dip in it, & when yu have so don rub it with A sleek stone, It will last 2 or 3 years & be ye better As Long As It will stick it is good = The Vertues If it be Laid to ye stomach It procureth An Apetite & helpeth any pain there, Applied to ye belly It easeth ye pains. If Laid to ye rains of ye back, It curth yr Bloody flux, runing of ye vains, heat of ye Liver or weakness of ye Back. It cureth All bruses & swelings it taketh Away Itches It breaketh fellons & Impostumes & healeth them, go draweth out any runing humor without breaking ye skin, & being Applied to ye fundament it healeth any disease there, Laid to ye head is good for ye eyes, & Laid to ye Relly It provoaketh ye terms & musketh Apt for conception - 8 A white salve for A Green wound Take 4 ounces of frankensence, half A pound of virgins wax, one pound of Burgendy pitch, meet all these together In A pipken over A soft fire, still stiring It, & when it's All melted pour it in a bason of fair water then take it out of ye water & with oyl'd hands work it well & roul it up & keep it in oyld paper = 9 To Make oyle of Roses Take A pint of ye Best salet oyle, & 3 [crossed out] quarters of A pint of Red rose Leaves & yn whites Are clipt off, put it in A strong earthon pot, stop it close with past, & set it In A pot of boyling water till yu think ye strength of ye roses Are Lost, then take it off & wring ye Roses through A canvas cloath till they be dry, then put in new, stop boyle & chang them 4 or 5 times till yu think it strong enough of ye Roses & put it up for yr use = It's very good for Any sprain Itch, swelling, or bruse, being chafed in to ye part by ye fire = 10 oyle of Swallows Take 2 dozon swallows out of ye nest, A good handfull of Rosemary, As much Lavender cotten & As many strabury Leaves strings & All, stamp All these together & fry them in may butter or rather sallet oyle till ye rawness be gon, then put it in A Earthon pot, stop It close 9 days & then fry it & wring it thorow A cloath & keep It in A gally pot when yu use it warm it And Anoint Any Ach or sinuew that do shrink = 11 For A stitch in ye side Take A piece of white Levened bread & Tost it on both sides then spread one side of it with ye best treakle yu can get & cover it with A fine cloath & Lay it or ye grived past = 12 syrup of Turnips first Bake the turnips In A pot with houshold bread then press out ye Liquor between two plates put A pint of this to half A pint of hysop water & As much brown suger candy As will sweeten it & boyle it to A syrup, It's very good for A cold or consumtion = 13 A drink for A feavor Take spring water & Red Rose water of each A pint & half, ye Juice of 3 Lemons, white suger candy one ounce, mix them together & give ye pasient to drink & spoonfulls At A time till ye unnaturall heat expire = 14 Allmond milk for a feavor take A pot of water, boyl it & let it stand to be clear then boyl in it violet Leaves strawbery Leaves & roots of each A prety handfull, & A good root of sorrell All wash'd, A crust of white bread, 2 ounces of Raisons of ye sun ston'd, boyl this from A bottle to A quart & with 50 blanch'd Allmonds & 30 pumpion seeds well beaten Draw An Allmon milk sweeten it with suger to yr tast & drink About A pint morning & Evening = 15 Allmon milk for A Bloody flux boyle some mutton in water & scum it well then put to it A handfull of Burage As much prunes, some sinomon, & whole mace ye uper chrust of A manchet boyl this well together till ye strength be in ye broth then strain it through A culender then take Jordan allmonds & parch them as yu wou'd pease & put ym in & Let ym boyle 2 or 3 whalms, then strain them throw A cloth & seson it well wth suger & A little salt let ye pasient drink of it All hours of ye day = 16 The only Receipt Against The plague Take 3 pints of muscadine & boyle in it A handfull of sage & A handfull of Rue till A pint be wasted, then strain it & set it on ye fire again, then put to it A peniworth of Long pepper, half an ounce of nutmeg All beaten, then let it boyle A Little & put A pound of Treakle & A quart of ye best Angellica water, take of it warm both morning & evening, A spoonfull In ye morning & half A spoonfull In ye evening All ye plague time, & under god it will secure yu for It never fails; It's not only good for ye plague, but small pox, measels, & surfits - 17 For A letter Take water of red tar & wash ye letter often with it & It's An Approv'd remady = 18 Docter Butlers preservative from ye Plague Take wood sorrell & pick it from ye stems & pound it very well in a stone morter then take to every pound of sorrell A pound, of suger finely beaten & 2 ounces of methredate beat them well together & put it in pots for yr use, take every morning before & After ye Infection for some time together as much As A walnut = 19 Docter Butlers Purging Ale Take of sarsaparella two ounces, polipody of ye oak & sena of each 4 ounces, of carraway seed & Anniseed each half an ounce, Liquorish 2 ounces, maidenhair & egrimony of each one Little handfull, scurvey grass half A bushell, beat all these grosly & put it in A cours canvas bag & hang it in 3 gallons of strong Ale, when it is 3 days old drink it = 20 A cordiall water Take pimpernell, Cardius, Angellica, scordium scabius & dragon, still these severally In A rose still, & when yu have A pint of water of each hearbs, mingle all together & disolve in it half A pound of venice treakle then still All together & mingle ye strong with ye small 6 spoonfull. of this water made Blood warm & given to one sick of ye plague driveth all ye venum from ye heart, It is exdlent for ye small nox or Any pestilent feavor = 21 Amber pills for A consumtion Take venice turpintine one ounce washed In Rose water, & six grains of ye powder of white Amber, mix them together & set them In A clean pot Upon Imbers, & let it not stand too hot, take A drop & lit it cool, & If it dos not stick to yr finger It is enough, then take of powders of pearl, white Amber, & dorell of each A quarter of An ounce, of ye Inner bark (powder'd) of An oak, A quarter of An ounce, sinomon & nutmegs of each As much & 3 ounces of white Loaf suger, make All these Into powder & seeth them & put ye pills In to them, before yu take them yn must be well purg'd, & After take 3 of ye pills wrap'd up in ye powder or what else yu will, & In ye morning take ye yolk of An egg new Laid, Warmd, & put in it As much of ye powder As will by on a shilling & sup it off, Let this be used some time & you'l find great benifit by it = 22 A medison for ye Palsey Take A pint of ye strongest mustard set it in A oven till it be As thick As A hasty puding, but ye oven must not be too hot to burn it, then set it on A chafindish of coles till it be dry enough to make to powder then mix half An ounce of betony powder with it sweets All, with suger candy to yr tast & take of it every morning for 10 days 23 To help Disgestion Take 2 quarts of small Ale, put to it one handfull of Red mints, Red sage A Like quantity & A Little sinomon, Let it boyl soft till half be wasted, sweeten it with suger to yr tast & drink A drough of it every morning & Evening = 24 safrom water Take 7 quarts of whitwine & Infuse in it one night an ounce of safron dryed, In ye morning distill it in A Limbeck or glass body, & put some fine, white suger candy to drop on 25 A cordiall Electury for stuffing of ye stomach & shortness of Breath Take A pint of ye best hony, set it on ye fire & scum it clean then put to it A bundle of hysop bruse it small before yu ty it, & let it boyl well till ye hony tast of ye hysop, then strain out ye hony very hard & put to it, ye weit of A sixpence of Angellica roots powderd, fine, powder of elicamepane root ye same quantity, ginger & pepper of each ye weit of 2 pence, Licorish & Aniseed of each ye weit of 1 pence All beatten very small severally, put All these In to ye straind hony & let them boyl A Little space, stiring it well All ye time, then take it from ye fire & power it in A clean pot stiring it till it be quite cold, keep it close cover'd for yr use, when yu Are troubled with shortness of breath take of it with A Licorish stick brused & you'l find ye benifit of it = 26 A perfume Against ye Plague. Take Angellica roots & dry them A very Little in A oven or by ye fire, & then bruse them very soft & Lay them in wine viniger close covered 3 or 4 days & every morning heat A brick hot & Lay ye not thereon, It's oxalent to Ayre An Infected horse or cloaths or to breath over it In A morning fasting = 27 To make spirit of Castorom Take caliminta 4 ounces, orang peill 2 ounces, nep half An ounce, walnut blosum half An ounce, rosemary flowers & tops of sage of each one handfull, castoreum one ounce, white wine one quart, distill it in A Limbick, this water is good for sounding fits, weak stumacks, & rising of ye mother = 28 A cordiall Water Take 2 ounces of dryed red gilliflowers & put ym in to A pottle of sack put to it 3 ounces of fine suger in powder & half A scruple of Ambergrees in powder, put All In A stone bottle stop it close, with A strong cork & shake it often. [crossed out] After 10 days pass it thrrow A Jelly bag, & give 2 or 3 spoonfulls As A great cordiall, this wey yu make Lavender wine for ye palsey & other distempers = 29 A nother cordiall Take 3 spoonfulls of mint water As much muskadine & 2 or 3 drops of spirit of sinomon, beat these well together with 2 or 3 spoonfulls of clove gilliflower spirit & give ye party now & then A spoonfull espesially going to Bed - 30 oyle of camomile stamp A good quantity of camomile flowers in A morter, put them in A pot with some oyle olive, let it stand 12 days, then boyle it A Little on ye fire then press it very hard, & put ye Juice In glasses & put more camomile flowers to it brus'd small so keep is for yr use; Drink A good Draught of it Every Morning fasting & In ye After noon About 4 or 5 A clock till It cures using no outward medison Mrs Moggs Green Oyntment Take 6 pound of May Butter Unsalted, one quart of sallet oyle four pound of Barows greese, one pound of ye Best Rosen, one pound of turpintine half A pound of frankincence, & to this quantity take these following hearbs of Each A handfull, Viz; small age, Balm, Lovage, Red sage, Lavinder, & Lavinder Cotton, herb grace, Parsly, Comfry, Louewell, Leaves Beach Leaves, Lungworth, mariaram, Rosemary, mallows, Cammahiell, st Johns wort, Plantin, All heall Chickweed, English tobackco, Elce henbance, Grownsell, wound wort, Betony, Egrimony, mellilit & Cardus, pick All these hearbs clean & wash them, strain them Clean from ye water (they must be all Gathered After ye sun Risees) then stamp them In A stone or Wooden Mork As small As possable yu can beat yr Rosen to A fine powder & Allsoe yr frankensence, & melt them first, then put in yr butter, hogs Greese, oyle, & when All is melted put in yr hearbs & let them All boyl together half A quarter of An hour, then take it from ye fire & keep stiring of it A quarter of An hour At Least, & in that time it's from ye fire put in yr turpintine & 2 ounce of Verdigreese very finely powder'd, & while yu put in ye verdigreese & turpintine stir it well, or Elce it will run over & so stir it till it Leaves boyling then put it in A Earthon pot stoping it close with A cloath & A board on ye top, & then set it In A dung hill of hors muck, 21 days then take it & put it in to A kittle & let it boyl A Little so that it dos not boyl over, then strain it through A Course Cloath In to Earthen Gally pot & when All is straind put to it half A pound of oyle of speek Cover ye pot Close till yu use it: In ye winter warm it when yu use it but cold in ye summer - All together 6 weeks in As much spirit As will Just cover it, & ye same quantity of spirit of Lavinder, keeping it close covered All ye while with A Blader & Leather, & when yu have distil'd it in A worm or Limbick Add to ye water, of Lemon or cittern peills dryed, & piony seeds hul'd of Each A Dram, sinomon, nutmegs, mace, Cardimus & cubibs of Each half An ounce, Lignum allowes one dram, make all these, in to powder, put Allsoe in to it half A pound of Juinboe being first ston'd & cut small, stop it Close for 6 weeks & then strain & press it very hard, then filter it, & After hang in ye clear Liquor In A sagnet bag As follows, powder of Pevell 2 Drams, prepared Vinarrays A scruple, Amber Greese, musk, & saffron, of Each half A scruple, keep it Allways in it close stopt, use it dropt on it Rub of Loaf suger Enough to wett it in A spoon its good for Lowness of spirit, fainty fits or Colick & Allsoe for Any Disorder of ye head to be taken Any time of ye Day or night - Mrs Keens. For the Rings Evill Broaken or Not Take ye flowers of Fox gloves About A peck stamp them very fine put them in to A new pipkin with 3 pound of new Butter not salted nor wash'd but Beat very well out of ye milk then set to boyl over A gentle fire for About 2 hours, keep it in the same thing & cover it close with Leather, warm part of it Every time yu dress ye sore, Anoynt ye swelling with the thin part & take ye thick & spred on A cloth Just ye bigness of ye sore, never chang ye cloath but scruple of ye salve from it Every time puting fresh to ye wound twice A day but be sure never put fresh cloaths to ye wound, yu must make A good quantity of ye medison At ye season it's to be got for its seldome Legs then A year before ye Evill will be well, when yu see ye sore grow biger be not trouble'd for it will doe so till All ye humors Are Dryed up & then twill heal asking [crossed out] up The purg for ye Evill take diaeatholocon a quarter of An ounce, of syrop of Roses solutine with Agarick half An ounce, mingle it with 3 spoonfulls of white wine & take it Every fortnight The Drink for ye Evill To Every Gallon of worth boyl with ye hops one handfull & half of Eye bright, sage, Rosemary, & Bittony of Each 2 handfulls & half put it In A vessell & when it's fit Let ye patient drink At Least 2 draughts Every morning fasting After it 2 hours, & At night take A draught 2 hours before Bed: this of Grace white. For ye Bloody Flux By Heall 2 Drahms of Cinomon Cassia, 2 Drahms of peppers, 1 Drahm of Galbinum, one Drahm of Lignum opiat, pound it & mix it in to pills with clarified hony, take 2 every night & 2 every morning fasting 2 hours after = for A sickly Girl one ounce of prepar'd Powder of steel must be mix'd with 4 ounces of conserved Bourage Flowers, & ye party must take about ye bigness of A walnut Every morning & at 4 a clock in ye after-noon till ye quantity is taken & if this dos not procure the desire'd effect she must repeat ye same quantity & take it without Intermition & After that is taken rest some time = Approv'd Tho: Tills receipt to turn an humer 2 peny worth of white copparis & one peny worth of Bolarmonik, Infuse it In one quart of spring water over A gentle fire till it comes to A pint so pat yr sore often with it with A Lining Cloath = Mrs Francklins Tinkture of Lemon Cut off ye Top of A Lemon & take out as many of ye seeds as yu can then put in the hollow of it As much saffron as twill hold, stop it in with ye top yu cutt off & pin it down that it may keep close stopt so put it on A plate before ye fire to roast as yu wou'd an Apple and As it rosts ye Juice will come in to ye plate which yu must take up before it dry Away, & when ye Lemon J soft-roasted, put it into A pint of Mounting or white wine with what Juice yu save'd from ye plate, Let it Infuse in ye wine (close stopt in A mug) A night or more then strain it & keep it in A Bottle close stopt for use, A spoonfull of this tinkture taken In A glass of Any Liquor In A morning fasting &c ye same going to Bed for A week together Is Admirable good for ye yellow Jaunders & will sertainly cure it if not gon too far, & It's Allsoe A very Great raises of ye spirits, At ye first coming of A feevour or small Pox, & Allsoe At ye turning of ye Later, if fainty, & Likewise in a Consumtion &c: = (Approvd) To: Vouls The Cordiall Gout Tinkture Take a quart of fresh Drawn Double [crossed out] disstill Anny seed water, of Hysopicra & Couchaueel of Each one Dram, saffron half A dram Infuse it in ye water 10 or All days in A warm place, then strain it off & keep it for use, take of this from 7 to 11 spoonfulls as yu find occasion at any time, but most properly goeing to Bead = It seldome faills giving Ease Either in gout or colick Niece Jones for An Ague Dry Lawrell Leives In an oven till they will pound to A fine powder & of ye powder take as much as will Ly on A shilling in Any kind of Liquor yu Like (but wine is best) repeat ye Dose every 4 or 6 hours & twill sertainly cure - Mrs Lewes for A Consumsion Take House snaills & wash them in Bear then prick each of them 2 or 3 times in ye fleshy part with A pin, so put them in A flaning Rug & hang them up over A dish, in which there is some Brown suger Candy powdered, & Let them drop on it till it come to ye moysture of A syrop, take A spoonfull of this syrop as often as yu please, but Especially when ye Cough is most violent - for ye Megism Take of camamell, comin, & crums of Brown Bread alike quantity, pound it all together with a Little viniger, make A plaister with it on A cloth and Bind it to ye forehead - for a fellon Take A handfull of smallage & A handfull of featherfow stain'd & strain'd, & with sope & wheat flower make A salve & use it - To cause sleep Take ye juice of Herylike, & ye same quantity of womens milk, & allsoe of Rose viniger, mix it together & dip some flax in it being first warm & bind it on ye Temples & some allsoe made up round & bound to ye palms of ye hands - an oyntment for shrinking of Cynews Take neats fost oyle finely clarified, & put to it as much Rosemary flowers, Cowslip & primrose flowers, a Like quantity, and as much as ye oyle will drink up, stop it in a glass jar & set it in ye sun 14 days, then put it in A little of water close stop'd & let it boyl six hours & then strain it thorow a clothe in to A pott for use. & anoynt ye Cynews with it - for ye Bloody flux & all other fluxes Take a quart of Red wine A quarter of an ounce of cinamon, Pounded, one peny worth of sanders & one peny worth of Blanch'd allmonds pounded & 2 ounces of Rice pounded boyl it all together till it be half wasted & thick, keep it stiring that it maint burn. put it out in A thin dish, & when it's cold cut it out in slices & eat it with white suger Candy sifted over it in ye morning fasting & at night or any time elce - for Deafness Take 2 sponfulls of ye juice of Rue, & as much womans milk (that suckles one of ye Contrary sex) boyl it together till it is Curdled, then strain it, & dip some black wool in it & therewith, drop it in to ye Ear morning & Evening for 9 or 10 days together very warm - A Nother Take Earth worms & fry them with Goose greese & drop some of it in ye Eares warm, 9 or 10 times - for sore Eyes distill hazel nuts before they have any kernells in them & use ye water to wash ye Eyes by it's self, or elce mix it with an equall quantity of Vervine & plantine water, & A Little bitt of Peony about ye bigness of A nutt desolved in it - The powder of Burdock seeds as much as will Ly on 6 pence taken in whitwine Posset is excelent good for ye Colick or stone - for A swelling in ye Legg &c boyl Groundsed & Hysop in milk very Tender turn ye milk to a posset & put on curd & hearbs together very hot - & for A bruse fry stone Hors dung in claret wine & Lay it on hot about an Inch thick as soon as possable after ye hurt - for ye strangury Boyle an ounce of Parsley seeds & 2 heads of Garlick brused, in A quart of milk make A posset of it with white wine, then strain it & drink of it morning & evening - A Glister for ye Wind Take Cammamell Green, or flowers, featherfue, mercury Leaves, mallows, wormwood, & Hollyhock, of each half a handfull, coryander, Dill seed, fennell seed & Anny seed, of each A Spoonfull brused, boyle all these in 3 pints of clear posset till it comes to 3 quarter of A pint; then strain it & desolve ov ye fire one quarter of A pound of Cours suger a quarter of A pound of fresh but & 2 ounces of syrup of Damask Roses & so adminester it - yu may allsoe boyl an ounce of Comfry Roots in A pint of milk & water, & in it ye white or 2 of new Layd Eggs Beat to Water Drink half A pint morning & Evening & some times put A scruple of powder of Bolearmonek in it, ye Clarified juice of Nettles is allsoe good in A draught of warm ale morning & Evening. For Lumbage & Stram in Bark and Grovel - Cpential Oil of Juniper 1 Drahm Oil of Turnpentine - 1 Drahm Spirits of Wine - 2 Drahm Tincture of Opium - 1/2 Drahm Balsam of Capivy - 1 Drahm Take 30 Drops night & morning in a Tea Cup of Soft Water B.S.D. Ip A Receipt for Cold Take a Lemon and pool it then cut it Round but into Slices then take a penny worth of Saffarn and put between the cuts than take A quarter of A pound of Honey and boil it for about 10 Minits on A Slow fire and while boiling poured Sums of the Honey on the Lemon take it of then Squeese the Juce of the Lemon out and take a tea Spoonful as you are trobuled some Receipt for a Cold Take a Large Lemon boil it 3 or 4 times in A Quart of water changing the water till the Bitterness thour of is Then ground itt in a Stone Mortar & add. two Ounces of brown Sugar Candy and two Ounces of Sweet Oil make an Electary [illegible] take A Tea Spoonful whenever the Cough is trouble some Stoughtons Elixa - To A quart of ye best Brandy put ye outside Peil of a Douzen Larg civill oranges or 15 small ones, Let it stand 3 weeks, shaking it every Day, after this strain it & put to it one ounce of Gentian cut very thin, one Dram & a scruple of Couchaneel pounded & half A Dram of saffron, both put in to A Little Bag, Let these stand 3 weeks, & then strain it thorow whited Brown paper in to Little Bottles for Use, & be sure, to keep it always stop'd close A Tea spoonfull is ye proper Dose in any Liquor yu like for ye Colick or any disorder in ye stomach For an Ague Take of Jesuits Bark half an ounce, of coriander-seed an ounce, of Anny-seed an ounce, beat all these to A fine powder & add as much powder Ginger as yu can take up between yu Thumb & two Fingers, & half a pound of brown suger, mix these well together with two or three spoonfulls of Rose water, put it in A skillet or Porvinger over a soft fire till ye suger be melted, & take the bigness of A wallnut of it Every 3 hours night, & Day, till half ye quantity is taken, then rest 10 or 12 Days before yu take ye other half, & then observe ye method as before; eat no flesh, nor drink no strong Drink while yu are taking of it, & begin to take it when ye fitt is off, but continue taking till ye ague is gon. these two I had of Mrs Irish & Apporov'd: the following Receipt was sent for my own Illness in 1727 by Mrs Fry from one of her Phisitions. (1) to stop all sorts of Fluxes & to prevent Miscaring Take 2 handfulls of red oake buds, as much of broad Plantine, & as much of Red Roses, an ounce of Cinamon & ye rise of one Pumgranet both beaten to powder, steep it in A quart of red Wine one night, & then still it in A Cold still, 3 or 4 spoonfulls morning & Evening for 3 days together is ye dose; it may be given to A woman in child Bed without any danjure, (2) A Water for spiting of Blood Take of nettles & cypres tops 3 handfulls, A pint of whites of Eggs, & a little yellow sanders & A Little mace, put it in to A Gallon of new milk & still it in A Rose still, (3) Snail water for A Consumtion Tak 80 House snails wipe them clean & break ye shells, put them shells and all in to A Gallon of New Milk, boyl it till it grow thick, then, put it in to A Rose still with A Handfull of mint in ye botom of ye still, put in ye Inside of A Loaf of white bread & A Handfull of hartshorn, & if ye party be Inclin'd to a feavour put in A handfull of dandylion, Let it drop in to A Bottle with white suger Candy in it & take 8 or 10 spoonfulls twice a day - (4) For violent pain in the Head Pound, ground Ivey & Lay it over ye forepart of ye head in A thin Cloth & being first heat [crossed out] in A fire shovil as it cools renew it - (5) for A fix'd Cough Take 2 ounces of syrop of Maiden hair, 2 ounces of syrop of violets an ounce of Conserve of Red Roses, half A Dram of flower of Brimstone mix it in to A Conserve & take of ye bigness of A nutmeg as often as yu please - (6) A Purg Take the best Rhubarb in Powder, 2 ounces of half, of salt of wormwood one Drahm, orange peill half an ounce grated nutmeg two scruples, Couchaneel half [crossed out] Drahm, Infuse this 48 hours by ye fire side in a quart of good Arrack, strain it off & keep it for use, two or 3 spoonfulls may be taken at a time twice or 3 times A week without any hindrance of business - (7) For An Ague Take half an ounce of Bark, Nutmegs Cinamon, Cloves, Mace, jamaca pepper Ginger & Carraway seeds of each 3 quartets of an ounce, A quarter of A pint of Anny seed water, mix it with A quart of small Bear, to be taken at 3 times at 8 a clock in ye morning, at one, & at 5 in ye afternoon ye next day after ye fitt & drink it warm, (8) Pills for the stone Aloes 2 Drams, Vonice Turpintine half an ounce, mix them together & make it up with powder of Licoris & Anny Seed & take 5 or 3 of them when yu goe to Bed - (9) an opening ahedison seana half An Ounce 2 race of Ginger slic'd, A thimble full of Anny seed, infuse these all night In A pint of whitwine, in the morning boyl it A Little then strain it & put in to ye Liquor 30 or 40 Prunes & stew them & eat 7 or 8 in A morning fasting & yu may goe any where - (10) To Make Daffys Elixer Take an ounce of senna; Guajacum, Elicampain Roots, Anny seed, Carraway seed, Coriander seed, & Liquoris of Each half an ounce, Raisons of ye sun ston'd 2 ounces, Infuse these in A quart of Good Brandy for 4 or 5 Days then strain it off, the dose is 2 spoonfulls at Night at 3 in ye morning, & no confinement being only a Little opening, (Approvd) (11) For ye Kings Evil Take the white Arch Angell, Greens, Blosom & all, boyl it in milk & turn it to Poset with small Bear, strain ye nettle & Curd from ye Drink, chop them together & apply it warm to ye sore twice A Day Let ye drink be ye only Liquor, & continew ye use of it till ye patient is recover'd eating no salt Meat durcing ye Cure the nettles may be Gather'd when ye Blosom is on & carefully Dryed, & they will Answere ye End in ye winter - (12) Barly Wine Good in A Feaver Take half A pound of french Barley wash it & boyl it in 2 or 3 severall waters ye waters being kept of an equall heat then take 3 pints of ye Last water yu have Boyll it in & half A pint of Succory water, A quart of ye best white wine, & ye juice of 3 or 4 Lemons clean from ye pulp & seeds add half A pound of white suger powder'd & Brew it all together very well till ye suger is well desolv'd then put in Bottles for use & stop it close, Let it stand 3 or 4 Days before yu drink it -- (13) for ye stone Take Haws at Michalmas bruse them in A Morter & put them in to A Cold still & put to them as much white wine as will cover them to 3 spoonfulls of this water take a Draught of Ale with A Little Nutmeg & suger & walk or Ride after it - (14) For ye pain of ye stomach Take 12 Corns of white Pepper (clean rub'd) in A spoonfull of sallet oyle, (15) A nother (fasting) Take 6 pound of Raisons of ye sun ston'd 2 ounces of gention sliced & A Little handfull of Egrimony dryed, as much of sentary, put it all in A Earthon pott, & when yu have boyl'd 20 pints of water to 16 put it to ye Ingredients boyling hot, & Let it stand 30 hours in A warm place then strain it off & work it as yu wou'd mead & Bottle it up Take A wine Glass full every morning fasting & so in ye after noon - (16) A Drink for any Tetterish Humor Take half A pound of Madder, 4 ounces of sena, 2 ounces of Anny seed 2 ounces of Liquorish, 2 handfulls of scabious, one of Egrimony, wash ye Roots & slice them bruse ye seeds, & put all in to A bag to 4 Gallons of Ale after it have done working, & when it's fitt drink A pint in A morning fasting - (17) A nother to sweeten ye Blood Take of Dock Roots 4 pound, of Dandelion 4 ounces, of Fumarory Leaves 4 handfulls, of Ground Ivey 4 handfulls, of Firr tops on handfull of Crude Antimony in powder typed up in A Lining Bag 6 ounces bruse & cutt ye roots & hearbs & put them in a bag & let them hang in A vessell of 6 Gallons of Ale which yu must drink of constantly till it's done - (18) For A Looseness & Vomiting Take of venice Treake & diascordiam of each 2 Drams, mix them very well with mint water, Barly water, & Cinamon water of each 4 ounces, of which take 2 spoonfulls in case ye disorder is very violent or Less if not so - (19) for A Cough & Rhume Take sassaparilla 2 ounces, China slic'd one ounce, of Lentise wood, guaiacum, & sassfrass of each half an ounce, 8 or 9 Dates Cut small, boyl these in 3 quarts of spring water till it come to 3 pints, drink A 3d part of A pint 3 times A day for 20 Days (2) for A Sore Mouth Turn some milk with Allom being boyl'd in it till it's Clear & sweeten it with Hony so with this wash yr mouth severall times A Day - (21) for ye bite of A Mad Dog make A salve with Onions salt & Rue pounded & mixd with Hony so use it (22) A Conserve for A Consumption Take some Almonds Blanch'd & Raisons of ye sun ston'd of each A like quantity which pound very fine & to A pound of this put 2 ounces of Syrop of clove Gillyflowers mix it well together, & give ye quantity of A wallnut to A Child twice A Day, - (27) for spitting of Blood Take of white, Red, & yellow sanders each an ounce, infuse them 16 hours in to quarts of water, then boyl it to 3 & a half add of maiden hair, Colts foot, sanicle, & Daisy flowers, & Pauls Betany of each 2 handfulls, sweet finnel seed, an ounce, Licorish slic'd, 6 drams of Raisons of ye sun ston'd 4 ounces, when boyl Away A nother pint & strain it for Use, so drink it in A morning & mostly Insteed of other drink, (28) For ye shingles (Myrrh) First Bleed then foment ye part with Lint seed, fenigreg seed & white Lilly more Boyl'd in milk & after purg with Epsom salts - (illegible) (29) To make Elixa Propritates Alloes [crossed out] one ounce [crossed out] Myrrh half an ounce, saffron A quarter of an ounce, one Dram of Tincture of sulphur, put all in a pint of Brandy in a Bottle, & set it in A Kittle of water & let it boyl half an hour, Let it stand till next day, so doe 3 days following, & then power off ye clear in to A another Bottle for use (Approvd) (30) for A quartan Ague Take A Dram of hicra picra in A quart of Anny seed water Infuse, & of this give 2 spoonfulls the party going to Bed Immediatly, (31) For A Bloody Flux Take A New Laid Egg break off ye Top & let out ye white then fill it with any strong Liquor (32) A Drink for ye Scurvy Take half A peck of scurvy grass, Hors-radish roots sliced 4 ounces, sage 4 handfulls wormwood Dryes one handfull, or more if Green, Raisons of ye sun ston'd 2 pound put it in to A thin Cloath Bag, & then put it in 14 or 16 Gallons of Ale when it has don working & put A stone in it to make it sink & when it have stood to be strong of ye hearbs take ye Bag out & stop ye vessell Close so drink it common, (33) For A Cold Palsy in ye Limbs Take A Gallon of spring water, sage & wormwood of each a handfull, boyl it on A soft fire till ye half is wasted, then take it off & make it very strong with mustard, so bath ye parts with ye hearbs as hot as can be Indur'd once or twice A Day, it have cured those as have had no eye of ther Arms to A miracle - Take 2 ounces of Rhubarb grated, the piece of A sivil orange Rosted, 2 ounces of Brown suger, candy Pounded, a Nutmeg grated, put it all in to a quart of Lisbon or other white wine, & let it stand 4 Days then strain it off, Drink a wine Glass going to Bed - (of Mr Cotterell) A Dyate Drink for ye Rhumatick Pains Take 3 peny Worth of Rhurirb cut thin, 3 peny worth of Seana half A pound of Lent figgs, half A pound of Raisons of ye sun ston'd, put it in to a Little Bag & hang it in A vessell of mild ale after it has don working: adding to it A handfull of ye green tops of Broom For An Astma (of Davis of Farmberron) Take half an ounce of the flower, of Brimstone, A quarter of an ounce of Ginger in fine powder, 3 quarters of an ounce of ye best send in fine powder, add to these powder 4 ounces of fine Hony & work it all together with A knife on [crossed out] a plate, take of this Electury ye bigness of A Larg nutmeg every morning fasting 2 hours after it, & at night going to Bed after Eating 2 hours, this doe for 5 or 6 days together, unless it work too Much, if so yu may rest a Day or two, & then take it but once A week at morning & night, for A Considerable time, & if yr self not perfictly well, take it once a fortnight as yu did before; A Green salve, from my sons Printed Book Take of Clowns - all heal, [crossed out] 5 handfulls, stamp it & put it in a pot, put to it 4 ounces of Lard, half a pint of oyle olive, 3 ounces of Bees wax, so boyl it till ye juice is allmost consum'd which is known when ye stuff do not bubble, then strain it & add to it 2 ounces of venice Turpintine, so boyl it a Little, & then put it in potts for use - melt some in a spoon & apply it to a wound with Linnet, & for a bruse to chafe ye part - for any sort of Flux Take of Camfary Roots wash'd scrap'd, & an equall weight of Plantine Leaves, pound them well together, with half ye quantity of Soft suger, & take of it 2 or 3 times a Day of ye bigness of a wallnut till its done, (from ye same) an Ague plaister one peniworth of Black soap, one peny worth of Gum-powder, one ounce of Tobacco snuff, & a Glass of Brandy, mix it well in a mortar & spread it on sheeps Leather for Plaisters to ye wrists puting them an an hour before ye fitt comes = Extiovius A purg for ye same disorder Severall Receipts of wines Known To Be Very Good By Those That have Used them (Couz: Cross) Elder wine. Take 20 pound of maligoe Raisons to 5 gallons of water let ye raisons be well rub'd In A cloth but not wash'd, cut them A Little without stoning & let them stand 10 days in ye water In some warm place stiring it often then let it run through A hair sive without pressing, put Elder, berys in A Jugg & set them in A kettle of boyling water & soe take ye Juice by degrees As It comes out of ye Berys till yu have six pints, Let ye Juice first be cold then stir ye water of ye Raisons & this well together, put it up In A vessell & let it stand 6 or 8 weeks in A warm place & then bottle it yn may try A Little suger in ye Bottling A nother way Boyl ye water very well & to 3 quarts of water put one pint of Juce, when ye water Is cold, put to it As much powder suger As will make it strong enough to bear An egg being well stired then put It in yr vessell & Let it work A fortnight before yu stop it - Couz: Crosses way to make Shery Take 3 gallons & A half of water & boyl half A gallon Away: take 12 pound of Raisons of ye sone stalks & All, cut them small & put them in to ye water when it is cold then take one or 2 spoon, fulls of yeast & put to it, lit it stand 10 or 12 days stir it every morning very [crossed out] very well, then strain it & put it in yr vessell & let it stand 10 or 12 weeks before yu bottle it - Mrs Stringers Burch Wine take A nimble or A nail & bore A hole in A burch tree either white or red & drive & nail in to ye tree uppon which hang A bottle to receive ye Juice, then put A Lock of wool in to ye bottle & one end of it in to ye hole of ye tree & ye Juice will run through it in to ye bottle In ordenary tree will run three quarts A day & if yu do not sudenly put ye Ingredients & boyl ye Juice once In two or three days it will be sower: to every gallon of Juice put one pound & half of ye best powder suger & to every 12 gallons put in ye peel of A Lemon & half An ounce of cloves then boyl these together one houer, then skim of ye froth As it rises which don put it in to earthon pots till it is cold then put in 2 or 3 spoonfulls of Ale yes & cover it close & In 10 or 12 days it will be fit to bottle this is to be done in march; when yu have what quantity yu desire from ye tree drive A wooden pin in to ye hold & ye tree will be never the worse - Goosbury Wine Take to every quart of juice (when the frute is ripe) 2 pounds of suger & 4 quarts of water clarifie yr suger In ye water As ye other & After order it As ye corand wine - (Approvd) - Couz= Clarks Clougilliflower Wine to 6 gallons of water put 2 pound of white powder suger Let it boyl & Afer it is well scumd Lit it boyl half An houer then put it to cool & then work it with good Ale yest As yu doe beer & when it have wrought prety well put in A good half peck of gilliflowers clipt & As yr flowers rises keep them down, yu may Let them stand in it 12 houers In A warm place then strain it & put it in to A vessell & stop it up Leaving A Little vent In A week or 10 days time As yu see it come clear bottle it, & In A Little time Afer it will be fit to drink -
