When about a year since the writer began a study of the bacterial flora of cultivated soils, an important obstacle was encountered at the outset. Species could be isolated and carefully studied, but to determine whether such species were new, or identical with those already described, was a matter of some difficulty and much uncertainty. The reason of this, as all bacteriologists will appreciate, lay in the fact that hitherto no attempt had ever been made to arrange the some- thing like 600 species of Schizomycetes unto anything like a system sufficiently minute to enable one to identify a bacterial form with any- thing approaching certainty. Not only did we lack such a system, but the attempt to create one for ourselves seemed an unsurmountable task. The difficulty in the way of an arrangement or classification of the bacteria lies mainly in the fact that three-fourths of the species already named have been so imperfectly and, perhaps, inaccurately described, that there are but few differential characters to form the basis of a separation or grouping. Another difficulty arises from the fact that the cultural characters of certain bacteria are quite variable, dependent upon media, conditions of growth, etc. This has led past authors to create many unnecessary new species, based upon characters which lie within the limits of normal specific variation. This consequent multiplication of bad species adds much to the difficulty of arranging them into a satisfactory system. The subject of systematic bacteriology is in its earliest infancy. The group Schizomycetes, to which the bacteria belong, has not received the same attention from the botanists as other groups of Cryptogams. The opinion has been too generally current that bacterlogy is a sort of adjunct to medical science, and that it belonged to the doctors. The result of this prevailing patronage of the medical men has been the admirable development of the pathological side of the subject, with com- paratively little attention paid to its general and biological aspects. I make, therefore, a special appeal for a larger study of the Schizomycetes, not merely as pathogenic agents in some minor relation, but as a group of plants demanding from botanists the same attention as any other group of cryptogams. This means especially the study af bacteriology from a systematic standpoint. The aim of all botanical investigation is the study of relationships between forms, the aim of the knowledge of relationships is the creation of a scheme of differentiation or classification. Any system of classifi- cation is at first imperfect. Specific and even generic distinctions need readjustment. Artificial systems of classification give way to more rational ones. The establishment of a system of classification, conven- ient at the time, but of a recognized provisional character becomes, how- ever, a base of operations, giving rational direction to biological study, whose final end is the perfection of this original provisional system. In other words, we must arrange biological forms according to some scheme, however crude, and look to future work to perfact or readjust it. This then is my apology for undertaking the work embodied in this paper. In the following pages an attempt has been made to arrange the known forms of the Genus Bacterium into what I can only designate as a purely artificial and therefore imperfect system. The species have been arranged solely with a view to their determination, hence the present scheme, while useful for its purpose, would in some instances be open to grave criticism, should it be supposed to be a natural system of classification as well. For instance, two species of the Proteus type might in one case produce a small amount of a yellow pigment, in the other not; they might be closely related species or merely varieties, and hence in a natural system they would stand together, but in an artifical grouping, intended for purposes of identification, they would be more widely separated. Again, it is true, as shown by Marshall Ward,1 that the same species may show differences in its power to liquefy gelatin, as B. fluorescenes liquefadens and B. fluorescens non-liquefaciens, which Ward considers may be merely varieties of the same species. These marked variations if consistent with species differentiation tend to sepa- rate more widely an artificial system intended for purposes of identifica- tion from a more rational system based upon truer relationships. In short the rather wide variations in specific characters will tend to make these two systems diverge quite widely the one from the other. The shortcomings in the present attempt are only too apparent to the writer, and hence much criticism is to be expected from bacteriologists. Crude and imperfect as is the present system of arrangement I believe it is better than nothing, and therefore I hope it will be of use to those who are working among the Saphrophitic bacteria. Nomenclature and Descriptions. The most important need in bacteriology to-day is a definite system of nomenclature by which the descriptions of the author can be accu- rately and in the fewest possible words conveyed to the reader. In all branches of biological science, specific forms, as animals, or plants, are accurately described, but back of those descriptions is the original type specimen, kept in some great herbarium or museum, from which the author’s description was written and from which a new descrip- tion can at any time be easily and quickly made. In bacteriology the majority of* the types from which the original authors wrote such crude and imperfect descriptions have been lost. Once seen by their discoverer they are, perhaps, rediscovered by 3 (*) Proc. Roy. Soc., LXI, 1897. p. 415. 4 another and redescribed as a new species, lienee we are never sure from the imperfect descriptions of older authors, with no type specimens in existence in pure culture to serve as reference, whether newly discovered forms are or are not identical with the older species. Thus in the absence of type specimens of bacteria, always available for reference, it is all the more important that bacterial species should be so minutely and accu- rately described that there will be no difficulty in the future for bac- teriologists to identify species from the written descriptions- It is hoped that the general use of formaline to kill and preserve cultures will enable us to retain for reference cultures on the most important media of all newly-described species of the future. To accurately describe a species and its cultural characters, terms having a definite meaning should be employed. By this means a single designating word will convey a better and more accurate meaning than a whole sentence of description after the author’s own peculiar style of expression. Descriptions of cultures should oe brief and pointed. Such descriptions cannot be made without the use of clearly-defined and well understood terms; in other words, a system of bacteriological nomen- clature is a very fundamental and pressing need. In the following table I, the author has attempted to construct a limited system of terms which have been employed throughout the present paper wherever practicable, one of the main objects in view being to condense the specific descrip- tions which follow; to further aid in this matter abbreviations have been also largely used, the meanings of which will be found in an accom- panying table. It is an open question among bacteriologists as to what should con- stitute a complete description of a bacterial species, also as regards the number of media to be employed. On general principles it would appear that the more minute and thorough the descriptions of the cultural characters in the maximum number of media, the more satisfactory the result. There is danger, however, that this thoroughness may be carried too far, leading us to make specific distinctions based upon minute and really trivial differences in habit or behavior. Until bacteriologists can universally adopt uniform formulae for making media, with closely approximate alkalinity, acidity or neutrality, so that a given medium in one laboratory will practically be identical with the same from another laboratory we cannot expect satisfactory re- sults. It is very important that the bacteriologist should study his forms 5 for a sufficient length of time, and under such slightly varying condi- tions of media and temperature as will invariably prevail at different times, to be sure that the cultural characters of his described forms may not be too hastily formulated. These difficulties are largely over- come by making the media as absolutely uniform as possible and grow- ing in a cold box kept uniformly between 20°—22° C instead of at varying room temperatures, as well as in the thermostat kept at 37° C. In the absence of uniformity in many matters of technique, it is best for the bacteriologist to describe (1) how his media are prepared and neutralized, (2) methods of staining, (3) how chemical tests are made, such as indol, phenol, nitrites, etc. In the following table II the writer has given a scheme for the description of a bacterial species of sufficient detail, it is thought, for most purposes. Very small, one celled chlorophyl free, colorless—rarely weakly red or green colored organisms, which divide in one, two or three directions of space, and which are arranged in a thread like, plate like or cubical man- ner. Dr. Wright doubtless has good grounds for making this and the preceding distinct species, a careful study of the descriptions, however, do not re- veal upon what specific differentiation can be well based. The features of distinction appear to be G si a central furrow with also laterals, giving a leaf like etching of the medium. Surface G cs with heavy br. radial stripes.
