It stands first in importanceamong those things which make for a long and complete life. More to be desired thangreat wealth, honor, or high position. The race belongs to the strong. Other things being equal, those of abounding health are the ones whosurvive and command. To be a good doctor, minister, teacher, or other leader inany walk of life, a boy or girl musthave good help and guard it carefullyas the most precious of all their possessions. We know now that manyof the ills of humanity, including those which arisefrom defects of the teeth and which caused muchphysical and mental anguish, can be prevented. Such prevention callsfor the adoption of a sound program ofhealth in early life, and a persistent practice ofgood health habits every day of the year. This film, The Lifeof a Healthy Child, shows how easy it is to orderone's daily habits to have a long and healthy life. Let's spend the daywith a healthy child. It's 7 o'clock, andthis little girl has had 10 to 12 hours ofsound, refreshing sleep. The first morning chore is todrink a full glass of water. Every day, a child should drinkfour to six glasses of water. Next, the hands andface are thoroughly washed with plenty ofgood soap and water. This should be doneat least twice a day, as cleanliness asnature's best beauty treatment, and the onlycure for many of the sores which appear on the face. Clean and sound teeth are evenmore vital to good health. Use a good smallbrush with short bristles so that every part ofthe back teeth may be reached. Plenty of good dentalcream or powder. Ask your dentist to show you theright way to brush your teeth. Brush from the gumstoward the biting surface. Use the brush asdry as possible, wetting it just alittle at the beginning. Brush the bitingservices, and press the bristles well into the groove. Brush the outside ofthe upper back teeth. Go way up and brush downtoward the biting edge. Brush the outside ofthe lower back teeth. Scrub hard. Brush the inside of the upperback teeth, from the gums down. Force the bristlesin between the teeth. Brush the inside ofthe lower back teeth. Reach way down and brushup toward the biting edge. Then, brush the upper frontteeth, inside and out, with a lengthwisemotion of the brush. Now brush the lower frontteeth, inside and out. Brush vigorously to polish withteeth and toughen the gums. When finished withthe teeth, brush the inside of the cheeks, the gums, and tongue. This will stimulate allthe mouth [INAUDIBLE].. Finally, while cleaning andputting away your brush, take water into the mouthand force the cream suds in between the teeth andall around the mouth. Your mouth will thenfeel clean and be clean. If your parents and physiciansprescribe cod liver oil, learn to take it with a smile. Good health demands suchwholesome and inexpensive foods as bread, leafy vegetables, allkinds of fruits, eggs, milk, butter, cream, and ice cream. This morning forbreakfast, we shall have sweet and juicy slicedoranges, a cooked cereal, and eggs, whole wheat toastwith plenty of butter, and a glass of rich, delicious milk. Just the right kind of abreakfast for the school and play activities of the day. And now it's time for school. Walk erect, shoulders back, feet flat on the pavement. Breathe deeply of a freshmorning air, through the nose with the lips closed. Continual breathingthrough the mouth will deform the bones ofthe face, which can only be corrected by an operation. Cross streets onlyat the safety lane. Never run across thestreet when at play. It may cost you your life,or maim you for life. Wait for the cars to passand then cross in safety. If all children wouldfollow simple safety rules, parents and teacherswould be spared one of their greatestworries and countless lives would be saved. In school, sit erect, withthe feet flat on the floor. Never slouch in the seator hunch the shoulders. An incorrect sittingposture at school has ruined many a child's form. If you get the habitof sitting up straight, you will develop a good formand a pleasing personality, which goes with it. Every child should haveplenty of outdoor exercise for a healthy bodyand a contented mind. No matter what parkyou play in the game, play it with a vest and a smile. Practice the art ofgood sportsmanship. Learn to be friendly andyou will attract friends. But it's time for lunch, andall who are in good health should be hungry when the hourarrives for the midday meal. A sensible luncheonconsists of a soup, vegetable salad of rawtomatoes, raw cabbage, lettuce, and celery, whole wheat breadspread well with butter, a small helping of pudding, and a glass of milk. Vegetables arebest if eaten raw. It is never wise toexercise too violently immediately after eating. Long dancing is a mild form ofexercise good for the growing girls. It develops a gracefulbody, poise of mind, and a cooperative spirit. Skipping the rope calls fora quick eye and nimble feet, while simple gymnasticsdevelop muscular skill. Swimming is a particularlyfine sport for boys and girls who want to becomestrong men and women. Every child should learn toswim, not only for health, but for safety. In play as in school, practice correct habits of standing, sitting, and walking. If you have formedthose habits, they will come naturally toyou all through life and help you to havea fine physique. Try it and see. And so the day goes on,with other forms of helpful plays so necessary to everychild for a normal, healthy, and happy existence. But even with the bestof physical habits, every child should have ahealth examination at least once a year. And so today the parentsof this little girl have wisely sent her totheir family physician. After visiting with herand asking questions about her health, the doctor hasher change to lighter garments to be weighed andmeasured, for if a child is much under- oroverweight, something is wrong that needs attention. The eyes are tested. Poor eyesightoften cause a child to be irritable andbackward in school. The throat is examined forsoreness or enlarged tonsils, which will cause achild too much trouble. Sinus infection oftenoccurs in childhood. Proper treatmentwill correct it. Running or sore earsshould never be neglected. If ignored, they maylead to intense pain and serious illness. Heart trouble andtuberculosis often make their start in childhood. They can be prevented orcured in the early stages. Once the disease hasbecome established, the treatment islong and tedious. A yearly examinationwill reveal defects before any greatdamage has occurred. And as a finalprecaution every child should have the tuberculin test,be vaccinated against smallpox, and immunized against dysteria. The next step inthis busy day is a visit to thedentist, which can be made at least twice a year. Sore and decayed teeth preventthe chewing of the hard food. Abscessed teeth dischargepus into the system. The vitality is loweredand disease is invited. A dental examinationwill reveal the defect, and all such teeth should beproperly filled or extracted. X-rays are valuable indiscovering hidden defects and infection, which may causemuch trouble in later life. Returning home, the healthy child enters carefully into thespirit of the family circle and plays contentedlywithout complaint. Even the pets love a kindword and cheerful smile and forget their differenceswhile they romp and eat. The healthy child who eatsno sweets between meals is always ready for dinner. This should be a happy occasion,as an age of digestion. Tonight, we shall have meat, peas, spinach, potatoes, followed by a fruit salad, acouple slices of whole wheat bread with plenty of butter, ice cream or fresh fruit, Graham crackers, and milk. If there is eveningstudying to do, be sure the light isin proper position. Otherwise, you may weakenand ruin your eyes. And so the day draws to a close. Once more, the teeth are firmlybrushed before going to bed. Apply yourselfvigorously to the task, taking 20 strokeson each surface. Brush tops of upper andtops of lower teeth. Brush outside of uppersand outside of lower. Brush inside of uppersand inside of lower. Brush hard, pressing bristlesin between the teeth. Brush the front, upper andlower, inside and outside. Brush gums, cheeks, and tonguefor a stimulating effect. Then while washing andputting your brush away, take water andforce the cream suds in between the teeth andall around the mouth. An evening bath at the endof an active day or at least twice a week. And now it's 8 o'clock timefor all healthy children to be in bed. Sleep with windowsup, winter and summer. It is the end of ahealthful and happy day. And so, good night. [Instrumental Music] [Instrumental Music]
