Barnes U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine Public Services Division 8600 Rockville Pike Bethesda, Maryland 20894 SERIES NOTE This is one of a series of Specialized Bibliographies prepared and distributed by the Public Services Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). These bibliographies are usually the result of a combination of manual and computerized searching, utilizing databases produced by NLM and others. Specialized Bibliographies are generally more selective in content than those bibliographies produced under NLM's Current Bibliographies in Medicine series. The only criterion for inclusion of a published work in a Specialized Bibliography is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the materials are not considered. Publications in this series are not copyrighted and may be freely reproduced. A single copy may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, gummed labed to the address given below. Comments and suggestions on this series may be addressed to: The Editor Specialized Bibliography Series Reference Section National Library of Medicine Bethesda,MD 20894 301/496-6097 CD-ROM: COMPACT DISC - READ ONLY MEMORY This bibliography was prepared expressly for the Evaluation Forum: MEDLINE on CD-ROM held at the National Library of Medicine on September 23,1988. The Forum was organized by the Library, and featured representatives of biomedical library and clinical sites that participated in the evaluation of seven commercially-available CD-ROM products containing subsets of the MEDLINE database. MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and the preclinical sciences; it contains about six million records from 1966 forward. CD-ROM has emerged as an important alternative access medium for scientific, technical, business, and a host of other informational databases. The subjects in this publication, therefore, are broader than the specific theme of the Forum and are intended to address the needs of various user groups with an interest in this technology and its applications. In addition to MEDLINE on CD-ROM, for example, it contains citations to articles about public access library catalogs, economic issues, specific databases, and standards. In gathering references, the MEDLINE and Health Planning & Administration databases of the National Library of Medicine were searched as well as ERIC, Information Science Abstracts, INSPEC, and LISA. The majority of the material comes from the non-NLM databases, and is not available in the National Library of Medicine's collection. This bibliography is not intended to be exhaustive, and the exclusion of a particular item is no reflection on its quality or usefulness. The purpose is to indicate to the audience the type and range of materials available and to provide a starting point for further investigation. This bibliography has been divided into four sections. The first section includes journal articles subdivided by topical area. Citations may appear under more than one topic. The second and third sections contain citations for monographs and serial titles. An author index comprises the final section, in which each author's name is followed by the page number on which his or her citation appears. SAMPLE CITATIONS Citations in this bibliographic series are formatted according to rules established for Index Medicus. Sample journal and monograph citations appear below.
