to liquids, may be considered as equal quantities, un- 
less the liquid be very heavy or very light. 
In writing prescriptions it is sufficiently accurate to 
consider 1 gram as exactly equal to 15 grains, and to 
consider 1 cubic centimeter as equal to 15 minims. 
The average drop of water equals 0.05 c. c., or 0.05 
gms. An average teaspoon holds sc. c., and an average 
tablespoon 20 c. c. 
It is safe to prescribe 30 gms. for a troy ounce, and 
250 c. c. for 8 fluid ounces.

It is important that laudanum be of known strength. 
The tinct. opii of Dr. E. K. Squibb contains upon the 
label an accurate assay of the contents, exhibiting the 
exact percentage of morphia. 
It should always be remembered that narcotics are 
not so well borne by children as by adults, and that 
they are apt to act cumulatively. DOSE TABLE. 
The doses given in the following table are for adults. 
Young’s rule should be used for children: Add 12 to 
the age and divide by the age to get the denominator of 
a fraction the numerator of which is 1. Thus for a

child 4 years old —-—=4, and the dose is one-fourth 
that for an adult. Strong narcotics should not be pre- 
scribed in more than one-half this proportion; of mild 
cathartics two or three times this dosage may be em- 
ployed. 
For hypodermatic injection the dose should be one- 
half that used by the mouth; by rectum five-fourths of 
the same. 
Doses are expressed in both the apothecaries’ and 
metric terms, and while the doses as given in the metric 
terms are not the exact equivalents of the doses given 
in the apothecaries’ weights and measures, they have 
been computed by the foregoing rules, and the discrep- 
ancies are slight and on the safe side.

26 When using the metric system, fluids are preferably prescribed by weight, employing the 
gram, its multiples and subdivisions, just the same as with solids, thus avoiding the errors due to 
refraction, adhesion and inaccurate measuring vessels. For practical purposes four grams of wa- 
ter may be regarded as equivalent to a fluid drachm of that liquid, and the same may be consid- 
ered true of tinctures and infusions; syrups, on the average, are about one-third heavier than wa- 
ter, so that a fluid ounce of a syrup will be approximately represented by 43 grams. If preferred, 
however, fluids may bo prescribed by volume in the metric, just as in the present system, using 
for that purpose the Cubic Centimeter, that is, a volume represented by a cube all of whose sides 
measure one centimeter. An ordinary back-gammon die is usually about this size One cubic 
centimeter (written 1 C.'C.) = 16.331 minims. It is approximately regarded as one-fourth of a 
fluid drachm.

ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION AND TREATMENT 
OF ASPHYXIA. 
Before commencing artificial respiration it should be 
seen that no foreign body or mucous is clogging the 
mouth, throat or nose, and that the neck is not restrict- 
ed by the clothing, in order that the air may have free 
passage to the lungs. The tongue should be drawn 
out of the mouth. There are two methods in common 
use: 
The Sylvester or physiological method is by far the 
best. Lay the person to be treated upon the back, then 
kneeling behind the head, seize each arm near the elbow 
and move them lying horizontally first away from the 
body then over the head until they meet above, when 
they should be given a steady pull for a few seconds; 
by this means the lungs are filled with air by the draw- 
ing up of the ribs, thus enlarging the cavity of the 
chest. The second movement consists in returning the 
arms to their former position alongside of the chest, 
making strong pressure against the lower ribs so as to 
drive the air out of the chest, and thus affect expira- 
tion. This should occupy but a second of time, and 
should be repeated about sixteen times in a minute, 
never being abandoned until it has certainly been as- 
certained that the heart has ceased to beat. 
The Marshall Hall’s method is as follows; Place 
the patient on his face and turn the body gently but 
completely on the side and a little beyond, then again 
to the face, and so on alternately, repeating this move- 
ment deliberately and perseveringly fifteen times only 
in a minute. (When the patient lies on the thorax this 
cavity is depressed by the weight of the body and expi- 
ration takes place. When he is turned on his side this 
pressure is removed and inspiration occurs.) 
In the treatment of Asphyxia from Drowning, the 
patient should be raised with his head held downward 
for a moment to allow the water to run from the lungs, 
at the same time commencing artificial respiration. All 
wet clothing should be removed, the patipnt wrapped 
in blankets, and hot bottles be placed at the feet and 
epigastrium. Hypodermics of whisky, atropine, strych- 
nine, coffee or caffeine, may be given. Ammonia may 
be placed to the nostrils to assist respiration. Apply 
electricity if possible. The fauces may be tickled with 
a feather, cold water may be thrown in the face, and 
the surface of the body may be slapped vigorously.

Artificial respiration should be commenced at once and 
continued until the patient breathes freely, and should 
not be discontinued under an hour. 
Asphyxia from Carbonic Acid Gas. The patient 
should be removed at once from the room where 
the poisoning has occurred, into the fresh air. Hypo- 
dermic injections of atropine, strychnine and whisky 
should he given. Electricity should be applied imme- 
diately and continuously. The body should be slapped 
vigorously, hot bottles should be placed at the feet and 
epigastrium. Artificial respiratiomshould be performed 
in the manner indicated above, removing all articles of 
clothing that would interfere with breathing. Oxygen 
may be inhaled. 
Acids—Mineral or Vegetable.—Administer magne- 
sia or chalk freely, with milk, or a strong solution of 
soap; demulcent drinks; baths; cataplasms; stimu- 
lants in collapse. 
Aconite.—Actlve erpetics at once; stomach pump. 
Never use emetics or apomorphia hypodermatically in 
these cases. Digitalis, physiological antidote. Stim- 
ulants. 
POISONS AND THEIR ANTIDOTES. 
Alcohol.—Evacuate stomach; cold affusion; inhala- 
tion of ammonia, or give hypodermatically. 
Alkalies.—In a recent case, stomach pump, washing 
out the stomach gently with warm water; demulcent or 
mucilaginous drinks. Do not employ chemical anti- 
dotes. 
Antimony (tartar emetic.)—In recent cases, stomach 
pump carefully and gently; demulcent drinks; infu- 
sion of galls, oak or cinchona bark, or the galls and 
bark in powder; stimulation in prostration. 
Arsenic.—Emetics and stomach pump at once. Hy- 
drated peroxide of iron in doses of one-half ounce fre- 
quently repeated, until relieved. Dialyzed iron may be 
used; demulcent drinks; whisky, etc., hypodermatical- 
ly: food per rectum. 
Belladonna (atropine).—Emetics or stomach pump; 
tannic acid and mucilaginous drinks. Physiological an- 
tidote, morphia, administered subcutaneously until pu- 
pils commence to contract. 
Bismuth Subnitrate.—Milk, sugar, albumen and 
mucilaginous drinks. DOSE TABLE. 
Cannabis Indica.—Evacuate stomach and give stimu- 
lants and electricity. 
Camphor.—Emetics, stimulants, wine, opium. 
Cantharides.— Stomach pump or emetics; demul- 
cent drinks; morphia internally; sweet oil, one-half 
ounce, every hour for six hours. 
Carbolic Acid.—Stomach pump and stimulating en- 
emata; sweet oil. 
Chloral Hydrate.—Keep body warm; artificial res- 
piration; stomach pump; strychnia hypodermatically 
with whisky, calfein and ammonia; electricity; strong 
coffee. 
Chloroform.—lnvert the body with tongue well out 
and forward; artificial respiration; electricity; inhala- 
tion of oxygen. 
Colchicum.—Emetics or stomach pump; stimulants; 
demulcents; castor oil; opium, strychnia, digitalis and 
whisky hypodermatically. 
Conium.—Emesis; electricity; digitalis, whisky and 
strychnia hypodermatically. 
Copper Salts.—Free emesis, aided by warm mucil- 
aginous drinks; whites of four eggs every hour; milk. 
Corrosive Sublimate (hydrarg. chlor. corrosiv.) 
—Free emesis, aided by warm drinks; if stomach pump 
is used exercise great care. Antidote, whites of eggs 
mixed with flour and water; milk; sweet oil; morphia 
and whisky hypodermatically. if necessary. 
Creasote.—Stomach pump or emetics; demulcent 
drinks, freely. 
Croton Oil.—Emetics; mucilaginous drinks; opium. 
Digitalis.—Emetics or stomach pump; vegetable in- 
fusions containing tannic acid or tannic acid in solu- 
tion; .stimulants; ether; demulcent drinks; astrin- 
gents; opium internally. 
Ether, Vapor of.—Cold affusion; exposure to cur 
rent air; artificial respiration; electricity. 
Hydrocyanic Acid (Prussic Acid.)—Treat immedi- 
ately; artificial respiration; cold douche; inhalation o. 
oxygen; electricity; whisky and strychnia subcutane- 
ously; mixture of protosulphate and sesquisulphate of 
iron followed by carbonate of potassium. 
lodine.—Starch or flour in water. 
Lead Salts.—Sulphate of zinc producing vomiting; 
stomach pump; milk and eggs freely; demulcents; 
opiated drinks; solution of sulphate of magnesia or of 
soda; castor oil. 
Lobelia.—Emetics or stomach pump; stimulants; 
purgatives.

Mushrooms.—Emetics; stimulants; morphia sub- 
cutaneously; chloroform in one-half drachm doses un- 
til symptoms are relieved. 
Opium and its preparations.—Emetics or stomach 
pump at once; atropia hypodermatically and freely un- 
til the pupils dilate; strong coffee; rectal injections of 
the fluid extract of coffee; flagellation; cold douche; 
electricity; inhalation of oxygen; keep the patient 
moving. 
Phosphorus.—Emetics, especially sulphate of cop- 
per ; stomach pump; turpentine is said to be a good 
antidote; water with whites of eggs or magnesia; stim- 
ulants hypodermatically; demulcent drinks. Avoid 
oils. 
Rhus Toxicodendron (Poison Oak.)—Apply strong 
solution of sulphate of zinc to the affected parts or an 
aqueous solution of bichloride of mercury, on bandages 
of lint or linen. 
Shell Pish.—Evacuate atomach quickly and the bow- 
els: then administer chloroform in one-half drachm 
doses. Cayenne pepper is useful. 
Strychnia.—Emetics or stomach pump at once; em- 
etics of warm water and mustard or ipecac or sulphate 
of zinc can be used; inhalation of chloroform; bromide 
of potassium in large doses; hydrate of chloral; stim- 
ulants if necessary; morphia; rectal injections of to- 
bacco. 
Tobacco.—Emetics or stomach pump; injections per 
anum; strychnia hypodermatically; stimulants. 
Zinc Salts.—Stomach pump or free emesis; mucil- 
aginous drinks, with milk and albumen; infusions con- 
taining tannic acid; whites of eggs; opiates i f necessary. 
Veratrum.— Emetics; stimulants, with opiates; 
strychnia hypodermatically. 
Venomous Bites and Stings.—lmmediately cauter- 
ize; excision of injured part; ligature above wound; 
brandy or whisky freely; carbonate of ammonia inter- 
nally. For stings of insects apply ammonia or lime 
water.
