    PRONUNCIATION GUIDE.
   The absolutely correct pronunciation of
 the phrases in this book can only be learnt
 by repeating them  after one who speaks
 French well.   The stress on each syllable
 is about equal.   The following are only
 very general rules of pronunciation.

 a = ah, sometimes  long (a or a),  some-
   times short.
 e = u in but: e, 6 and  ai = a in late
   (ai before 11 is pronounced i): e is short
   as in prks  (preh) or  long as in mere
   (mare).
 i, y = ee.
 o, au, eau —  o.
 u = German  ii. eu, ceu, oe = u in  burn.
 ou =» oo in moon.
 oi = wa in wash.
 In all other combinations  of vowels the
  first  vowel is pronounced quickly,  the
  voice dwelling on  the second.
n or m, when preceded  in the  same syl-

   lable by a vowel and not followed by n
   or m, or when followed by any consonant
   except n or m, has a nasal sound.  This
   can be produced by starting to say  n,
   but stopping before the tongue touches
   the roof of the mouth.
 an,  am, en,  em = o in  gong  with the
   n  sound above.
 in, im, ain, aim, ein = a in sank with n
   sound.
 on, om = au in taunt with n sound.
 un, um, eun  = u in until  with  n sound.
 In words ending in ien, en is sounded as
   nasal in above.
 Final  b is  usually silent, c is usually
   hard but is soft before e and i and when
   written  c.
 ch is usually soft as in champagne, hard
   before r.
 Final d is silent except in sud.
 Final e unaccented  is silent, but  the con-
  sonant immediately before it is sounded.
 Final f is generally sounded but is silent in
  certain words  as  ceufs.
g is hard before a, o and generally u, and
  is generally silent at the end of  words.
g is soft before e, i and y and = z in azure.

h  is silent.
j = z in azure.
Final lis silent in fusil,  gentil, fils (feece).
  11  = y usually.
p,  when preceded by m or followed  by t
  and  when final is  usually silent.
q  = k.
r is  rolled on the tip of the tongue and
  is never slurred, but is silent in Monsieur
  (m' si-uh).  See er below.
Final s and t, though usually  silent, are
  joined to the following word and pro-
  nounced with  it when such word begins
  with a vowel.  There are other forms of
  this joining {liaison) which can best be
  learnt by practice with French people.
Final s is sounded in anus, obus, etc.
s between two  vowels = z.
t in terminations  lion  and  some others
   = s.
u after q and g is silent, but shows that g
  is hard.
Final x is silent.
gn  =  ni  in onion.
Final  er  = ay,  except  in monosyllables
  as/er (fair) and in amer, cuiller (kweyair),
  hier, hiver, cancer, ether (a-tair).

 Final ez  = ay, except  before a word be-
   ginning with a vowel, when it is pro-
   nounced ay and  the z is sounded  as
   part of the next word.
 The definite  article is  le, mascuhne, la,,
   feminine, les (lay), plural.
 The indefinite article is un  (masc), une
   (fem.).
 There is no neuter.  Inanimate objects are
   spoken  of as he or she. You can deter-
   mine the gender of a word by the article
   used,  except that before a vowel and
  usually before h, le and la are written /',
  and  are pronounced  with the word—
  Varbre = larbr.
Adjectives agree with their nouns in gen-
  der,  the feminine usually adding e to
  the masculine form, and in number, the
  plural usually adding  s to  the singular
  form.

                NOTE.
  The following questions and phrases are
submitted with the idea of facilitating the
admission and  the treatment of cases in
Base  Hospitals.
  These questions are so arranged as to
permit as far as possible, the answer "yes"
or "no."
  The first series  of  questions  takes up
the necessary conversation for the trans-
ferring of a patient from an ambulance to
a Base Hospital.
  The second series concerns pain, wounds
and operations.
  The third series  concerns the treatment
of wounded in the wards; also medicines
and beverages.
  The fourth series concerns general con-
versation for nurses in the wards.

traitement  des  malades  et des  blesses

  Autant que possible les questions sont
