Students having Leave from the Phyfician* or Surgeons to vifit the Hofpitai, to pay the Treafurer Forty Shillings each before they be admitted, which Money is to be laid out with the Advice of the Phyficians and Surgeons in the Purchafe. of a Medical Library and Mufeum. Vlth. The Phyficians and Surgeons to pay particular Attention to the dis- charging the Patients, as foon as their Cafes will admit, and to inform the Apothecary of it without Delay. Vllth. They are to require of the Apothecary to keep affair Account (in a Book provided for that Purpofe) of the feveral Patients under their refpective Cares, and of the Diforders they labour under, and enter in the faid Book die Recipes or Prefcriptions they may make for each of them. Duty of the Apothecary. Ift. He is to vifit the Wards every Morning, and be prepared to report a State of the Patients to the Phyficians or Surgeons. lid. That he difpences no Medicines, Wine, or Spirits, without Directions from the Phyficians or Surgeons, which he is Daily to receive from them. Hid. That he never abfent himfelf when the Phyficians or Surgeons are to attend, and' that he always, on going out, leave Notice with the Steward or Matron where he may be found* IVth. Vlth. He muft deliver to the Vifiting Committee, on the firft Day of their Vifitation, a Lift of fuch Medicines as the Phyficians or Surgeons fuppofe may be wanted in the Courfe of the Month. Duty of the Steward* Ift. Under Direction of the Vifiting Committee he is to purchafe Wood, Provifions, and all other Stores, (except Medicines) for the Ufe of the Hofpitai. lid. To Market regularly, and purchafe fuch Provifions as the Matron may direct. Hid. To keep under his Key, all Stores, Wines, Spirits, Sugars, Molaffes, Linen and Blanketing, not made Up, and all other Neceffaries of which any Quantity is purchafed ; and to deliver to the Apothecary or Matron, Weekly, or at fhorter Intervals, fuch Quantity as may be called for. IVth. To overfee all Workmen employed in Repairs, ckc. and to keep art Account of the Time each Perfon is employed. Vth. To take Care of the Garden, and fee that it is kept in Order. Vlth. To take Care of the Doors, and fee that the outer Gates be always locked at Nine in the Evening, from the Firft of the nth Month to the Firft of the 5th Month, and at Ten from the ift of 5th Month, to the Firft of 1 ith Month. Vllth. To fix a Ticket at the Head of* each Patient's Bed, with the Name of the Patient; together with that of the Phyfician or Surgeon who attends. VHItrn To vifit every Ward every Morning and Evening, and at a different Hour from that in which the Matron goes to the Wards; to caufe the Names of the Patients to be called over, and minute thofe who are abfent; and, by his Authority, to affift the Nurfes in keeping Up Order among them, and particu- larly to take Care that every Patient is in Bed by Ten o'Gloek at Night. On the firft Day of each Month he muft exhibit to the Vifiting Com- mittee an Account of all the Provifions, Stores and Liquors then under his Care, with the Prices they coft, and of whom purchafed j and a Lift of fuch Articles as he fuppofes may be wanted in the Courfe of the Month ; and to receive from them an Order directed to the Auditors of Accounts, to procure fuch Articles as they may think necefiary. That the Matron take Care of all the Houfhold Goods and Furniture, and at the firft Meeting of the Governors, after the Annual Election* exhibit to them an Inventory of the fame- Rules Rules and Regulations for the New-York Hospital. 21 Rules refpcfting Patients. Ift. Application for Admiflion into the Hofpitai, muft be made, in the firft Inftance, to one of the Governors or Phyficians, who, if they think proper, will give a Recommendcition, directed to the Vifiting Committee, to whom it muft be p-efented at the Hofpitai, on the 3d or 6th Day of the Week ; and after their Diforders complained of, are examined by the Phyficians or Sur- geons, the Vifiting Committee will either direct the Steward to admit them ; or they will refufe them Admittance, as to them may feem proper. lid. No Patient can be admitted into the Hofpitai unlefs the Vifiting Com- mittee fign an Order to the Steward for that Purpofe, except the Phyfician's Certificate expreiily mention, that the Patient's Cafe requires being immediately admitted. Hid. That no Patients fhall be admitted whofe Cafes are judged incurable, Lunaticks excepted, or any whofe Cafes do not require the particular Conve* niencies of an Hofpitai. IVth. That no Perfon having the Small-Pox, Itch, or other infectious Diftempers, fliall be admitted until there are proper Apartments for the Recep- tion of fuch as are afflicted with thofe Difeafes. Vth. That Women having young Children, fliall not be received (except when the Child and Mother are both Patients, or their Children are taken Care of elfewhere) that the Hofpitai may not be burthen'd with the Maintenance of fuch Children, nor the Patients difturbed with the Noife. Vlth. That Citizens in the State of New-Tork, not refiding in the City and County of Neiv-Tork, defiroirj of being admitted into the Hofpitai, muft be recommended by a Juftice of Peace, and the Overfeer or Overfeers of the Townfhip wherein they refide : it is requefted that Cafes of their Difeafes, drawn up by a Phyfician or Surgeon, be fent with them. Vllth. That if there fhall be Room in the Hofpitai to fpare, Patients fhall be admitted at fuch reafonable Rates as the Vifiting Committee may agree for, and the Monies arifing from the Boarding and Nurfing fuch Patients, fhall be paid to the Treafurer for the Ufe of the Hofpitai, and all fuch Patients muft give Security that they fliall not become burthenfome to the City or HofpitaL F VHIth, That Ruli.s and Ah.GVLATiossfir the New-York Mostital Vlllth. IXth. That no Patient go out of the Hofpitai without Leave from one of the Phyficians or Surgeons, firft fignified to the Steward or Matron. Xth. That they do not Swear, Curfe, get Drunk, behave Rudely or Inde- cently, on Pain of Expulfion after the firft Admonition. Xlth. That no Patient prefume to play at Cards, Dice, or any other Game within the Hofpitai, or to beg any where in the City of New-Tork, on Pain of being difcharged for Irregularity. Xllth. That fuch Patients as are able, in the Opinion of the Phyficians and Surgeons, fhall affift in nurfing others, wafhing and' ironing the Linen, waftyng and cleaning the Rooms, and fuch other Service as the Matron or Steward fliall require. Xlllth. That no Spirituous Liquors be brought into the Hofpitai, or ufed by any Patient, unlefs by Order or Confent of one of the Phyficians or Surgeons. XlVth. Tint no Patient enter the Kitchen, or any of the Servants Apart- ments, under any Pretence whatfoever, unlefs by Order of the Steward or Matron. XVth. The Librarian fliall keep an accurate Catalogue of the Books, which fliall fpecify the Title, Author, Size, Number of Volumes, and depofit, when loaned, of each Work. Hid. Every Work in the Library fhall be numbered, both by a Label on the Back of each Volume, expreffive of the Number, and by the fame in um- ber written within the Volume; and on the Title-page of each Volume fhall be written, " The Property of the New-Tork Hofpitai." It is the Duty of the Librarian to receive, and give out, Books^ obferving, when they are returned, to replace them on the Shelves, after having carefully examined whether they are free from Damage. No I3ooks can be lent out of the Library (except to the Governors Phyficians, and Surgeons, of the Hofpitai) but on Mondays, Wednefdays Thurfdays, and Saturdays, arid between the Hours of Eleven and Twelve when the prefcribmg Hour is at Twelve ; and between Eight and Nine, when it commences at Nine. The Vifiting Governors, Phyficians, and Surgeons are allowed to take out Books, at the Hours of their Attendance, on Tues- days, and Fridays, and at the cuftomary Hours on other Days. Vlth. The Librarian is not auriiorized to let out Books to any Perfon, fave the Governors, Phyficians, Surgeons, Apothecary, and Houfe-Surgeon of the Hofpita', and to fuch Students of Medicine as are regularly admitted, apree* able to the Rules of the Honfe, to fee the Practice thereof, (except as herein after provided.) VHth. The Governors, Phyficians, and Surgeons, may take out a complete Work, even if it confift of feveral Volumes,—but are not allowed this Liberty in refpect to voluminous Colleaions of diftinct Papers, fuch as the Medical Commentaries, &c. of which they can take but a fingle Volume at a Time. VHIth. No Student of Medicine eaiv take out more than one Volume of any W ork at a Time. IXth. Folios may be kept outfour Weeks, Quartos three, and Duodecimos two Weeks. Xth. If the Volume be not returned within three Months, it is to be confidered as loft, and the Depofit is forfeited to the Library.. XIHth. If any Perfon fliall lofe a Volume or Volumes of any Set of Books, ■the Remains of the Set fhall be delivered to him, on his fubftituting a new \ Set. In Cafe this be not done, his Depofit is forfeited, and the mutilated Set lis alfo retained in the Library. XIVth. Damages of Books are of four Degrees,-— [a]-. The defacing the external Appearance of the Book; [b] The deftruction or confiderable Injury of the Covering; [c] Blots, Spots, and fmall Rents, &c— fo as to deface, but not dsftroy, the Contents of the Book ; [d] And, the tearing, fo as to endanger or occafion the Lofs of fome Part of the Contents.,-— When any Damage, fhort of deftroying its Value, happens to a Book, the Librarian is to notice and report it to the Vifiting Governors, who are to determine the Fine to be paid by the Borrower—-according to the Degree and Nature of the Injury and the Coft of the Book.—The Depofit is to be stained till the Fine is paid. If the Borrower refufes to pay the Fine, the Depofit is forfeited. I X Vth. All Fines and Forfeitures are to be appropriated to the Ufe of the Library The Librarian is to keep an exact Account of the fame, which he :::s to render Monthly to the Vifiting Governors, and pay the Sums focollefted stto their Order.
