1..Before a General Court Martial, which convened at Alcatraces 
Island, Harbor of San Francisco, California, December 5, 1861, pur- 
suant to Special Orders, No. 224, dated Headquarters Department of 
the Pacific, San Francisco, December 2, 1861, and of which Major 
Andrew J. Smith., 1st United States Cavalry, is President, was arraigned 
and tried— 
Private John Carrigan<, Company ”D,” 6th Regiment United States 
Infantry. 
Charge.—“ Violation of the Ninth Article of War.” 
Specification. — “In this; that he, the said Private John Carrigan, of 
Company 11 D,” 6th Regiment United States Infantry, being a 
prisoner in charge of the Guard, did offer violence to Sergeant 
Thomas R. Hall, of Company 1<D,” 6th Regiment United States 
Infantry, by cutting and killing him with a knife—he, the said 
Sergeant Hall, being Sergeant’of the Guard, and on the execu- 
tion of his office. This in camp, at or near Mendocino City, in 
Mendocino county, State of California, on on about the 28th 
day of November, 1861.” 
To which charge and specification the accused, Private John Carrigan, 
Company “ D,” 6th Regiment United States Infantry, pleaded “Not 
Guilty.” 
Finding 
The Court, having maturely considered the evidence adduced, finds 
the accused, Private John Carrigan, Company “D,” 6th U. S. Infantry,, 
as follows: 
Of the Specification, “ Guilty.” 
Of the Charge, “ Guilty.” 
Sentence. 2 
Company “D,” 6th Regiment U. S. Infantry, “ To be hanged by the 
neck until he is dead, at such time and place as the President of the United 
States may direct, two-thirds of the members concurring therein.” 
II..The proceedings in the foregoing case have been approved by 
the Commanding General of the Department of the Pacific, and for- 
warded for the action of the President of the United States, who ap- 
proves the sentence awarded the prisoner by the Court. 
The sentence will be executed under the orders of the General Com - 
manding the Army of the Potomac.
