Dear Joshua:

For some time I have been trying to find a moment to tell you
how pleased I was to learn of the recognition accorded you and Ed
Tatum and George Beadle in the Nobel Award for 1958, It has been a
pleasure for about twelve years to watch your progress: in research
‘and in academic environments. I have recalled our first interview
in New York after Dr. Ryan and Ed Tatum had suggested to the Jane
Coffin Childs Memorial Fund that it might be worthwhile to aid you
to take some time off from medical school to work with Ed Tatum.
Then I have thought of your change over from medical studies to the
academic course and our occasional chats in New Haven and, especially,
just before you went to the University of Wisconsin.

All of us who have known you have found pleasure and pride in
your development and accomplishments even befere the reeognition now
accorded. This honor seems very appropriate although it has come
somewhat earlier than we had dared hoped for, I am sure that the
present officers and members of the Boards of the Coffin Childs Fund
cannot have more pleasure and pride in one of their early fellows
than do exeofficers like Dr. Bayne-Jenes and myself.

It has been interesting to me to find continuing contacts
through handling grants for support of your research by the National
Cancer Institute and it has been a pleasure to see you serve on the
Study Sections.

Now that you are going to a new post at Stanford University, I
wish you continued success in your work. I shall look ‘forward to
seeing you from time to time.
