HERTIG, M.D. Boston 15, Mass May..31,..1961 SHATTUCK PROFESSOR OF PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Medical Genetics Stanford University School of Medicine Palo Alto, California Dear Dr. Lederberg: I am very much interested in your movie "The Effect of Antibiotics on Bacteria", which I saw listed in the "Pathology Film Reviews" (Laboratory Investigation, 1960: 9, 535). I should also add that I was a little shocked at my own ignorance and oversight, because last year I published a rather extensive study of cell death, without mentioning bacterial death. I was aware of this lacuna, of course, and I do plan to make up for it in some future review; however, had I known that even a movie was available, I would probably have succumbed to the necessity of being more "grlindlich". I am taking the liberty of sending you the paper here enclosed, NS You will find it very ...mammalian, I am afraid, and very pervaded » with pathologic folklore; however, I will say in my defense that in our particular field a review of this kind was long overdue. To return to your movie, I would be very glad to see it for my own interest, but I would also like to use it in a course which I am going to give this summer as a new venture ("Introduction to General Pathology", a course especially planned for investigators in the biological field who do not have a medical background). Ideally, I would like to see and "rehearse" the movie early in June, and actually show it in the course later, between June 26 and July 15. If the movie is really available, as I hope, I will let you decide how to go about it; the simplest solution would be (for us) to have it now, and return it on July 16; but if you do not wish to part with it for so long a time, we could see it now, return it, and ask for it again a few days in advance of the actual projection. me, a ee of wi 2 cm ag . ae fn ~ bgt, bed ef LAO a.
