STATENS SERUMINSTITUT Nr. TELEFON: CENTRAL 2835 TELEGRAM ADRESSE: STATSSERUM POSTGIRO: 2817 May 26°, i952, Dr. J. Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison 6, Wisconsin U.S.A. Dear Dr. Lederberg: I received your letter of May 215% and can tell you the following: The culture 248 ( 0 19) was received from the Institute of Hygiene in Basel, Switzerland, in 1941. I suppose it was isolated from a patient Hasenblhl as the strain was sent to me designated as "Hasenbtihl". You could get clinical data from Miss Mislap, Institute of Hygiene, Basel. The culture contained both a motile, monophasic (phase 1 = b) culture of S.paratyphi B and a non-motile culture, sent to you. The motile culture did not split off the second phase, but is no more in my collection. Biochemically both cultures were identical, both were d-tartrate-negative, not belonging to the java-variety. I have never found a cross- reaction between the H antigens b and i. The biochemical behaviour of 0 19 indicates that the culture belongs to S.paratyphi B and is a loss-variant of the motile, monophasic culture, isolated from the same patient. lama little doubtful whether the O form spontaneously should split off a motile phase with antigen i. With kind regards yours sincerely PK Afi F. Kauffmann
