Nearly 50 representatives from local educational institutions, ‘health facilities and consumers met fo continue planning recruitment of needed health - ersonnel under the chairmanship of George A. Wistreich, Ph.D., Director of the Allied Health Sciences Department, East Los Angeles Colleges = Efght Task Forces were developed and approved by the general body: 1) Organ- ‘zational Structure, 2) Funding, 3) Legislative Liaison and Atticulation,-4)*Sur- vey of Health and Educational Facilities, 5) Survey of Health Manpower Needs, 6) Recruitment and Retention, 7) Certification, Accreditation and Licensing, and 8) Community Health Information and Liaison Committee. - - Four of the Task Forces have already met and have developed objectives. The Organizational Task Force has set January | of 1972 as thei r-goal to complete corporation proceedings in order to qualify for funding deadlines. The Funding Task Force is identifying and securi fig funds to accomplish incorporation. The- ~ Survey-of Health and Educational Facilities Task Force is developing-a question~ ~ naire:to be sent fo various educational and service facilities in the area so that | pertinent information can be compiled in January. -. Because the planning of the Committee on Minority Recruitment for Health Ca- reers and the current activities of the Experimental Health Services Planning and Delivery System.in East Los Angeles are so closely related to the regional concept for Area Health: Education Centers, as outlined at the meeting by Dr. Donald W. ~ Petit, AREA V Coordinator, a Task Force on AHEC's was added. ~ The ‘Committee has scheduled their next meeting for December.15 , at which time - the Task Forces will report on their progress. k &k * AREA V COMMUNITY PROGRAMS STAFF On November I[8, Fred D, Hubbard, at the invitation of the staff of fhe Pomona Lo Health Center, L.A, Co, Health Dept., gave a progress report.on the assessment he is making of health needs and resources as viewed by low-income and minority € persons in the Greater Pomona area. Miss Teresita P,. Moreno and Clyde E. Madden . are working with the Older Residents Health Care Project of East L,A., which has now screened 634 patients, establishing a good referral system for those patients who need medical attention. The project, jointly supported by L.A. County Health Dept, and AREA V, has been in operation five months, The Chinese Community Free Clinic Inc., which ts seeking to alleviate some of the major health problems caused by last year's influx of 20,000 Chinese immigrants into the Los Angeles area, has received seed money from AREA V. Gail M. White and Jane Z, Cohen, who are assigned as liaison with this project, will provide core staff experience, expertise and contacts as requested. Dental services for the under- served members of the L.A. Chinese Community will be the Clinic's first undertaking, with comprehensive medical services as the ultimate goal. Coordinator of the Clinic is Wai Chow Leong,Pastor of the Chinese Seventh Day Adventist Church. The Clinic is located at 3000 Ramona Road in Alhambra. Petit, MD (AREA V Coordinator), Mrs. Alison K, Mauer and Mrs. Opal Gilliam (members of AREA V Advisory Council) are among a group of 24 people who have been invited by the President's Committee on Health Education to assist in the planning for a Regional Hearing to be held in Los Angeles on Jan. 20. The [6- member President's Committee was created in September, 1971, to recommend ways to develop in the general public a sense of "health consumer citizenship." The Committee and its Staff Council are initially examining the institutions, agencies, and programs ‘currently involved in the health education field to determine how successful they have been in achieving their aims. As part of the national fact- finding effort, regional hearings are planned to take place in seven principal cities, ( afford area health officials and educators, as well as representatives of the public and consumer groups, an opportunity to discuss with the Committee their own activi-~ ties and programs and describe their needs and plans for future development. Follow- ing the hearings, the Committee will review and evaluate the national, regional and local data it has assembled and from it develop objectives by which the level of our national "health consumer citizenship" can be improved, One objective proposed — by President Nixon in his health message to Congress last February, and certain to be considered, is the establishment of a National Health Education Foundation. The Committee welcomes the active participation of all individuals, organizations, and institutions concerned with this important national problem.
