Each area would be staffed by physician-director with experience in continuing education with an appointment at both medical schools and acceptable to key health professionals. An important factor is that this area staff could not be identified with any given hospital in any area. DEVELOPMENT OF AREA FACILITIES FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION Objectives: Planning, promoting, coordinating and evaluating on-going programs of continuing education in each of the five areas. It would seek to utilize the con- tinuing education coordinators in the larger hospitals, seeking to have them devote a significant portion of their support time in assisting the area staff to develop an effective program of continuing education for the staffs of smaller hospitals. II-1 GEORGIA (continued) SHORT-TERM TRAINING TO IMPROVE TEACHING COMPETENCIES IN CARDIOVASCULAR PHYSIOLOGY FOR MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING INSTRUCTION Objectives: Is defined as an inter-regional project and funds are requested by Georgia Regional Medical Program on an inter-regional basis. Proposes to establish short-term training in cardiovascular physiology for nursing instructors from schools of nursing in the Southeastern states. Georgia State College will provide this training in the form of two three-week courses each summer, to improve the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases by strengthening instruction in basic nursing programs, emphasizing . physiology underlying recent advances, Said to be the first such course to be offered in the United States. A RENAL FAILURE TRAINING AND DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM Objectives: Submitted by the Medical College of Georgia as con- sistent with effective participation in state planning for improved health care resources. Proposes to strengthen preparation of prefessional.-and technical personnel through this training and demonstration program. Training will be of various kinds and at several levels, including a direction toward the practicing physician, emphasizing direct participation in patient care. A TEACHING, TRAINING AND DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM IN HYPERTENSION AND NEPHROLOGY Objectives: To be located in Emory University School of Medicine for physicians, nurses and allied health personnel to work in the field of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of hypertension and kidney disease ‘through- out the states Funds will be used to employ teachers and trainers, prepare materials, set up practice facilities and mock-up of equipment, evaluate per- formance of trainees and encourage the establishment . of hypertension-nephrology programs in smaller cities. \ Goal is to produce the team a nephrologist would use | in a combination office and hospital practice in a community of 75,000 and a hospital of 200 beds. CARE OF PATIENTS WITH FLUID ELECTROLYTE AND RENAL PROBLEMS Objectives: MAINE Provide continuing education in fluid electrolyte and renal problems for physicians and nurses. Two postgraduate courses will be conducted by the Kansas University Medical Center staff for physicians. An intensive course in both theory and techniques of fluid and electrolyte and renal problems will be given to four or five nurses from each of the five participating hospitals. The nurses trained in this six-day course will then conduct courses at their own hospitals. METROPOLITAN OBJECTIVES: METROPOLITAN Objectives: WASHINGTON REGIONAL CANCER REGISTRY As listed in DIRECTORY WASHINGTON AREA PERIPHERAL VASCULAR FACILITY As listed in DIRECTORY PEDIATRIC COMMUNITY KIDNEY DISEASE PREVENTION CENTER - GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY* Objectives: METROPOLITAN SOCLETY* Objectives: Requests funds for the continued support of Pediatric Community Kidney Disease Prevention Center and the development of five secondary centers in the D.C. Region in order to establish in community hospitals up-to-date comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic methodology to prevent progressive renal disease. Plans call for establishing the secondary centers in four D.C. hospitals (Children's, D.C. General, Columbia, Sibley) and one Arlington, Virginia hospital (Arlington Community Hospital of Virginia). Program will provide continuing education for postgraduate physicians, nurses and technicians through visits by the primary center staff, quarterly conferences and two-day clinical laboratory demonstrations. WASHINGTON SCHOOL OF INHALATION THERAPY - D.C. THORACIC Establish a comprehensive training program aimed at developing qualified inhalation therapists in the D.C. area. Arrangements are being made with the Washington Hospital Center to act as host institution for the program. *xApproved But Not Yet Funded. - II-5 METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON, D.C. (continued) A COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL STROKE PROGRAM - ARLINGTON HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION* Objectives: MICHIGAN Stroke program will be developed in a community hospital for the purpose of improving care, demonstrating optimal diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, and conducting an in-service training program for professional and allied health personnel. A four-bed teaching, demonstration and rehabilitation unit will be established to serve as the focal point for the activities of this project. A stroke team will be organized and an evaluation protocol will be devised. SURVEILLANCE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT IN SPECIAL CARE UNITS Objectives: As listed in DIRECTORY STROKE BASE CENTER* Objectives: Function of the Base Center at Wayne State School of Medicine will be to act in a consultative, coordinative staff capacity for the Regional Cooperative Stroke Educational Program. The Center will also be responsible for developing evaluation techniques, providing consultation to the cooperating centers and their participating hospitals and for the overall evaluation of the program. The Base Center will also provide the staff and secretarial services for the regionwide Stroke Program Development and Review Committee. DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPREHENSIVE ATTACK ON THE PROBLEMS OF STROKE* Objectives: Wayne State School of Medicine requests funds for the first year of a three-year program period to initiate, at Detroit General Hospital, a six-bed demonstration unit providing total care for the stroke victim from the onset of symptoms until his return to society. Program envisions excellent diagnostic facilities, medical, surgical and nursing treatment in the acute phase, rehabilitation, psychological evaluation and speech therapy. A continuing program in using the total community resources will also be developed. *Approved But Not Yet Funded. II-6 STROKE DEMONSTRATION UNIT AT DETROIT OSTEOPATHIC HOSPITAL* Objectives: Establish at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital a stroke demonstration unit which will be a ten-bed referral facility for the detailed clinical study of the stroke suspect as well as a unit for the comprehensive care of the stroke patient. Planned to include rehabilitation care in the demonstration unit and in affiliated extended care facilities. Formal curriculum is planned for the in-service training of both physicians and allied health professionals. CENTRAL MICHIGAN COMPREHENSIVE STROKE PROJECT* Objectives: Three-year project at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine - Sparrow Hospital - Rehabilitation Medical Center to improve the early management of the stroke patient in the Central Michigan area. Program consists of two major components developed simultaneously: the demonstration of stroke patient care and the stroke management educational component. MICHIGAN HEART ASSOCIATION - PUBLIC INFORMATION PROJECT* Objectives: Michigan Heart Association requests funds for the first year of a three-year program period to develop a public information and education program for the primary and secondary prevention of stroke. Program will be aimed at the general public. Statewide program to provide energetic health education to alter personal health habits and conditions that increase the risk of stroke or heart attack is set forth as the primary prevention facet. Secondary prevention would be covered in a companion campaign on the warning signs of stroke. DEVELOPMENT OF A CARDIOVASCULAR CENTER (MERCY HOSPITAL, BENTON HARBOR) * Objectives: Applicant states that the development and establishment of a modern catheterization and angiography laboratory would assist and benefit both the area hospitals and the medical community by: 1) providing for the early identification of patients having coronary artery and vascular disease; 2) establishing a cardiovascular teaching program which would serve the physicians of a three-county area; and 3) providing assistance in the development of a communications system between Wayne County General Hospital, University of Michigan, Mercy Hospital, other area hospitals and the physicians within the three-county area in order to reduce the time lag in the use of new heart disease procedures. kApproved But Not Yet Funded. II-7 MISSISSIPPI CORE PROGRAM Objectives: To support administrative and planning functions. STROKE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT Objectives: In addition to providing a demonstration of management of acute and potential stroke patients, this unit will be heavily involved in the teaching of medical and nursing students and residents. Also, short term continuing education courses will be set up for community physicians and nurses. Courses for nurses have already begun. CHRONIC PULMONARY DISEASE Objectives: MOUNTAIN STATES This project will provide a variety of different types of training programs for nurses, physicians, and other health personnel. A treatment center for ambulatory chronic pulmonary patients will be established to demonstrate patient care and educate patients. Two mobile units will provide screening and treatment to patients and continuing education programs to health personnel throughout the Region. The course is aimed at up-dating and improving the knowledge and practical skills of those registered nurses, members of the health team, who are employed in the clinics (for ambulatory patients) of health departments and hospitals in the state of North Carolina. : COORDINATED ONCOLOGY CHEMOTHERAPY PROGRAM Objectives: PILOT STUDY: Objectives: Submitted by the Oncology Center, Bowman Gray School of Medicine} proposes to develop a mechanism to inform physicians, particularly those remote from immediate consultation, of well-designed patterns of primary and secondary treatment of cancer. HEART-SOUNDS SCREENING OF SCHOOL CHILDREN Submitted by the North Carolina Heart Association} proposes a pilot study of heart-sounds screening of school children using the PhonoCardioScan. Pilot study would be conducted in two divergent areas of North Carolina. Study will allow systematic study of the extent of heart defects, evaluation of congenital and acquired heart defects, and considerations for organizing and managing like programs in other Regions. II -9 NORTH CAROLINA (continued) MAMMOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGISTS REGIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM Objectives: OHIO STATE SUDDEN DEATH: Objectives: PROPOSAL FOR Make available a qualified technologist to act as 4 technical consultant in mammography for the Region; assure the use of satisfactory equipment and properly trained personnel in the use of mammography as a diagnostic tool in breast disease; and provide this service to all medical institutions and community hospitals in this Region. A MOBILE CORONARY CARE UNIT Funded July 1, 1968 from earmarked funds, this project will continue two additional years. It is viewed as an investigation and fact-finding activity: to investigate the events leading to either "sudden death" or myocardial infarction outside the hospital, and to study the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic efforts. THE USE OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION IN MEETING INFORMATION NEEDS OF LOCAL COMMUNITY HEALTH PRACTITIONERS Objectives: COUNCILS FOR Funded as feasibility study. Activity constitutes continuing effort, within the health field, to establish and evaluate a computer-based information network having Computer-Assisted Instruction capabilities. Project will expand the small network established during the first year in four community hospitals to additional hospitals throughout the Region. This expansion includes provisions for cost sharing by local communities. CONTINUING EDUCATION: A PROJECT TO DEVELOP COORDINATED PROGRAMS FOR Objectives: HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Seeks to develop a mechanism for coordinated programs of continuing education. An area or local council for continuing education will be established in Springfield, Ohio. Education needs and desires of health personnel in the area will be studied, and education programs developed. A bibliography of resources available locally will be prepared. Council will serve as 4 clearinghouse of information about programs that would benefit health personnel. II-10 UREGUN SOUTHERN OREGON DIABETIC INSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION Objectives: As Listed in DIRECTORY MOBILE EMERGENCY CARDIAC PROJECT ~ PHASE I (PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL) Objectives: Demonstrate the reliability of a mobile-emergency— radio-electrocardiographic-telemery system in Portland, Oregon, and to determine objectively the level of need and probable effectiveness of specialized on-site paramedical treatment. TRAINING PROGRAM TO PROMOTE BETTER CARE OF THE DIABETIC PATIENT - GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER Objectives: Promote for M.D.s throughout the Region a- fuller appreciation of those concepts involved in the continuity of care of individuals with diabetes mellitus. Recognize need to train individuals to teach in class- rooms for diabetic patients and instruct qualified individuals from nursing homes and similar institutions in the care of diabetic patients.
